These celestial spectacles are truly magical and can definitely create the impression of extra luminous objects in the dark, hazy sky. My recent encounter with a moon halo, where a bright moon was surrounded by a beautiful ring, was a stark reminder of how our atmosphere can play tricks on our eyes. This phenomenon, which casts an eerie glow, happens when moonlight passes through millions of tiny ice crystals suspended in high-altitude cirrus clouds. Each crystal acts like a tiny prism, bending the light and creating that luminous circle around the moon. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially when it illuminates the silhouetted bare trees below, making the whole scene incredibly prominent. Now, about those 'three moons' – this is where 'paraselenae' come in. Think of them as the moon's version of ‘sun dogs’.
