POV: You take your kids for a “Family Hike” in the Alberta Badlands… and your 6 & 7 year olds suddenly decide they’re professional free climbers. 😭😩

I was on another peak with our 4 year old when I looked across and realized WHERE THEY WERE!

They had run ahead and climbed to the TOP of this hoodoo peak so fast that my husband couldn’t catch them and one side was FULLY EXPOSED!!! 😭

I could see them from across the canyon but couldn’t get to them.

The absolute PANIC I felt watching my babies standing up there by themselves. 😭

Safe to say we had a very serious conversation about hiking rules after this one. 😮‍💨😩

📍 Horsethief Canyon, Drumheller, Alberta 🇨🇦

Would your heart have STOPPED too?! 😩

... Read moreHiking with young children in rugged landscapes like the Alberta Badlands offers a unique blend of excitement and unexpected challenges. During one of our family hikes at Horsethief Canyon, we encountered a situation that turned quite intense when my 6 and 7-year-olds scaled to the very top of a hoodoo peak, an area with an exposed drop. As a parent, I’ve learned that while exploring nature with kids is incredibly rewarding, it also demands strict adherence to safety rules and continuous supervision. The natural beauty and adventurous terrain of Drumheller make it tempting for little ones to test their limits, but as we discovered, even the most prepared families can be caught off guard. After this hike, we established clear rules that every family should consider before hitting trails in areas with exposed cliffs or unstable rocks: always stay within designated paths; hold adults' hands in risky sections; never climb higher than the adults; and set frequent check-ins to ensure no one wanders off out of sight. Moreover, equipping kids with proper footwear and explaining the dangers of exposed ledges beforehand helped us maintain safety without dampening their enthusiasm for the outdoors. Carrying a small first aid kit and knowing the location of the nearest help were additional precautions that made us feel more secure. Reflecting on our experience, I strongly encourage parents planning family hikes in places like the Alberta Badlands to prepare both physically and mentally. Encourage your children to be adventurous but teach them to respect nature’s dangers. This balance ensures everyone enjoys a fun and safe outing. Our heart-stopping moment at Horsethief Canyon was a powerful reminder of how quickly situations can escalate in the wild. However, it's stories like these that deepen our appreciation for family adventures and the precious memories created when exploring the great outdoors together.
