2 ways to knot a button on cord

2 knots you can use to add a button to a leather cord bracelet.

There are several ways to attach a button to leather cord. Here are two easy knots I use most often when starting a leather wrap bracelet with a button.

The first knot is a little more bulky, but I think they both look nice and get the job done (and are both quick and easy to make).

KNOT # 1 :

Insert the cord through the shank (or button holes), line up the cord ends and bring the button to the center of the cord.

Make an overhand knot by making a loop near the button using both cords together and bringing the button through it. Before tightening, adjust the placement of the knot by sliding it toward the button. Once happy with the placement, pull the knot tight.

KNOT # 2:

Insert the cord through the shank (or button holes), line up the cord ends and bring the button to the center of the cord.

Make a loose overhand knot in ONE side of cord near the button, then feed the other end of cord through the center of the knot. Adjust the placement before pulling it tight.

On the other end of the bracelet (after completing the beaded section), tie two overhand knots (using both cords together), spaced apart just enough to allow the button to pass through and catch.

... Read moreBeyond just attaching buttons, mastering a few basic knots for your leather cord can open up a whole world of DIY jewelry possibilities! I quickly realized that knowing how to secure ends and create adjustable pieces was just as important as the clasp itself. Here are a few more tips and techniques I've picked up along my jewelry-making journey. First, let's talk about adjustable bracelets. One of my absolute favorite techniques is using a sliding knot closure. This is perfect for bracelets or necklaces where you want flexibility in size, making them easy to put on and take off. While the button knots are great for fixed closures, a sliding knot means you don't need a clasp at all! To create one, you typically use two simple overhand knots on either side of the main cord, ensuring they can slide freely without slipping. It takes a little practice to get the tension just right, but once you do, it's a game-changer for custom sizing and accommodating different wrist sizes. Another thing I've found incredibly useful is knowing how to make neat finishing knots. Sometimes, you just need to secure the ends of your leather cord without a button in sight, or perhaps you're finishing off a beaded section. A simple surgeon's knot or even a double overhand knot, pulled tight and perhaps secured with a tiny dab of jewelry glue, can make all the difference in the professional look of your piece. It's about preventing fraying and giving your design a polished edge. I always make sure my knots are snug against any beads or findings to avoid gaps, which really helps the overall aesthetic. Choosing the right type of leather cord is also crucial. You'll find various types like round, flat, braided, and even suede. The thickness also matters – a thinner cord (like 1mm or 1.5mm) is great for delicate pieces, while thicker cords (2mm or 3mm+) are perfect for chunky designs or making a statement. I usually pick my cord based on the weight of the beads and the overall look I'm going for. For cleaner cuts and to prevent fraying, a sharp pair of jewelry pliers with a wire cutter or even a craft knife works wonders. For synthetic leather, a quick pass with a lighter can melt and seal the ends, but for genuine leather, a little glue is usually best. Finally, don't forget the decorative potential of knots themselves! While we often think of knots as purely functional, a beautifully tied knot can be an integral part of your leather jewelry design. Think about macrame techniques or incorporating larger, more intricate knots as focal points on a necklace or bracelet. Even simple knots, when strategically placed, can add texture and interest. Experiment with different cord thicknesses and colors to see how the knots transform. Working with leather is such a tactile experience, and the knots you choose really tell a story about your craftsmanship. I love how a well-placed knot can elevate a simple design. Remember, practice makes perfect, especially when handling leather cord – don't be afraid to experiment and find your own favorite knotting styles!
