4 mistakes from my first year writing with AI

Four things I got wrong in my first year of writing with AI, and what each one actually taught me.

None of them were the AI's fault. All four were about what I did with the draft afterwards.

1. I thought editing meant fixing words.

I would swap out the obvious AI vocabulary, delve and leverage and the rest of them, and call the job done. The sentences underneath stayed exactly as they were. That structure is what a reader actually reacts to, long before they can point at a single word.

2. I wrote longer to sound more professional.

Long sentences and formal vocabulary felt like effort, so I assumed they read as quality. They read as hard work for the reader. Most web writing should sit around an eighth to ninth grade reading level, which means shorter sentences and plainer words. That is better writing, not lazier writing.

3. I trusted a single detector score.

One tool said a paragraph was fine, so I stopped thinking about it. Later I ran the same paragraph through three different detectors and got three different numbers. There is no shared standard between them. A score is a signal worth glancing at, never a verdict.

4. I sent work without reading it out loud.

This is the check that catches everything else. Read a paragraph aloud and listen to your own breathing. If it falls into a steady repeating pattern, your sentences are all landing at the same length, and that evenness is the clearest sign of machine writing there is.

If you are a freelance writer working with AI drafts, the fourth one is the habit worth building first. It costs nothing and it exposes the other three.

... Read moreReflecting on my own experience working with AI-generated drafts, I've learned that successful editing goes far beyond swapping out awkward AI vocabulary. One habit that transformed my writing was reading my work aloud. This simple practice reveals the rhythm and flow of sentences, and helps catch repetitive patterns indicative of machine-generated text. When your voice falls into a steady, monotone pattern, it’s a sign to vary sentence length and structure to regain a natural, human tone. Another insight I gained relates to writing length and complexity. I initially believed longer sentences and formal words would enhance professionalism, but it actually made my text harder to read. Aligning my writing with an eighth to ninth-grade reading level—using shorter, clearer sentences and straightforward vocabulary—made the content much more accessible and engaging. This approach also reduces cognitive load for readers, improving retention and satisfaction. Regarding AI detection tools, I used to rely heavily on a single AI content detector score as a final judgment. However, different tools can produce wildly varying results. Viewing these scores as one of many signals—rather than definitive verdicts—helped me maintain perspective and focus on improving overall quality instead of chasing perfect detection scores. Finally, the biggest lesson is that none of these mistakes were the AI's fault. Instead, they were about how I chose to handle and refine the AI drafts. By recognizing the importance of editing for structure and flow, simplifying language, critically evaluating detection tools, and incorporating vocal checks, I’ve developed a more effective and authentic writing process. For anyone freelancing with AI-generated content, I highly recommend making reading aloud a daily editing habit—it’s free, easy, and exposes key issues that other methods may miss.
