3 SILLY MISTAKES STUDENTS MAKE WITHOUT REALIZING

I’ve been tutoring for three years now, and even my most advanced students still get tripped up by these three things!

1. "Less" vs. "Fewer"

A lot of people say 'I have less assignments,' but if you can count them on your fingers, like 1, 2, 3 essays, you actually want to use fewer. Use 'less' for things you can’t count, like 'less stress' or 'less time.

2. "Me" vs. "I"

People think 'My friend and I' is always right, but try removing the other person. You wouldn't say 'The professor emailed I,' you’d say 'The professor emailed me.' So, it’s 'The professor emailed my friend and me.

3. "Effect" vs. "Affect"

Here is the easiest way to remember: Affect is an Action (the verb). Effect is the End result (the noun). The weather affects my mood; the effect is that I’m sleepy.

... Read moreFrom my experience tutoring students over the years, I've noticed these common grammar issues tend to trip up learners at various levels, and addressing them can make a significant difference in both spoken and written communication. Firstly, the 'less' vs. 'fewer' difference is surprisingly misunderstood. Many students use 'less' when referring to countable items, such as 'less assignments,' but the correct usage is 'fewer assignments' because assignments can be counted individually. However, 'less' applies to uncountable quantities like 'less stress' or 'less time.' A quick tip I share is to ask yourself if you can count it one by one—if yes, use 'fewer'; if no, use 'less.' Secondly, the 'me' vs. 'I' confusion often appears in compound subjects or objects. Many students default to 'My friend and I' in all contexts, but this isn't always correct. A helpful method is to temporarily remove the other person from the sentence and see which pronoun fits. For example, instead of saying 'The professor emailed my friend and I,' notice you wouldn’t say 'The professor emailed I' but 'The professor emailed me.' Thus, the accurate phrase is 'The professor emailed my friend and me.' This exercise helps solidify correct pronoun use. Lastly, the 'effect' vs. 'affect' pair challenges many learners since they sound similar but differ in usage. 'Affect' is usually a verb meaning to influence something, while 'effect' is typically a noun signifying the result of a change. For instance, 'The weather affects my mood' means the weather influences mood, and 'The effect is that I’m sleepy' describes the outcome. Remembering that 'A' for Action relates to 'affect' (verb) and 'E' for End result links to 'effect' (noun) can be a practical mnemonic. Incorporating these guidelines into daily writing and speaking practice not only avoids common mistakes but also boosts confidence. I encourage students to read their sentences aloud and apply these checks actively. Over time, these grammar points become more intuitive, contributing to clearer and more effective communication in academic and everyday contexts.

No offense, but this makes no sense It’s just grammar and I get how like that can be a problem if you’re writing a paper but if you’re just talking to someone about this, there’s no real big reason to have to change what you’re saying
