Getting me back

2024/8/22 Edited to

... Read moreHave you ever felt like you've lost a piece of yourself along the way? That's exactly how I felt before I embarked on this incredible journey of 'getting me back.' It's a deep dive into self-discovery, and honestly, it feels a lot like peeling layers of an onion – sometimes it makes you tear up, but with each layer, you get closer to the core. I started hearing about 'shadow work' and initially, it sounded a bit intimidating. But as I explored it, I realized it's simply about acknowledging and integrating the parts of ourselves we've suppressed or deemed 'unacceptable.' For me, this meant confronting old fears, insecurities, and even some anger I'd long pushed down. It wasn't always comfortable. There were days I wanted to give up, where the emotions felt overwhelming. But like peeling an onion, the process, though sometimes raw, ultimately reveals something new and essential. One of the first things I did was start journaling, really digging into those uncomfortable feelings. I'd ask myself: 'Why do I react this way?' or 'What belief is holding me back?' It was incredible to see how many of my current struggles were rooted in past experiences or beliefs I didn't even realize I still held. These were the first few layers coming off. Then came the realization that these 'shadow' aspects weren't bad; they were just misunderstood or unacknowledged. For instance, my tendency to people-please was a shadow of a deep-seated fear of rejection. By shining a light on it, I could understand it, accept it, and begin to transform it. This isn't about becoming a 'perfect' version of yourself, but a more whole and authentic one. It’s allowing all parts of you to exist, just like my image in the car, ready for the journey, perhaps with my short, curly gray hair and colorful earrings, signifying a willingness to be seen as I am. The 'peeling layers' metaphor really resonates because it’s not a one-time event; it’s a continuous process. You don't just peel one layer and you're done. There's always another, deeper insight waiting to be uncovered. Each time I thought I'd reached a core truth, another layer would present itself, offering even more clarity and freedom. It's a journey of continuous growth, and I've found so much strength in embracing the entirety of who I am. This isn't just about understanding your past; it's about reclaiming your power and shaping a more intentional future. The lightness and freedom I've experienced by integrating these parts of myself are truly remarkable. It's like shedding a heavy cloak I didn't even realize I was wearing. If you're feeling a similar desire to 'get yourself back,' I highly recommend exploring shadow work. Start small, be gentle with yourself, and remember that every layer you peel back brings you closer to your most authentic, vibrant self. It's a transformative path, and seeing a happy, smiling woman looking back at me in the mirror, truly feeling like myself again, is the greatest reward.
