Why I Love Shooting Film 🎞️

Shooting film forces you to slow down. You only get 24-36 shots, so every frame matters! No rapid fire clicking (I tend to be an over-shooter) and no checking the screen constantly to see if you “got it”.

It’s all about trusting your eye, living in the moment, embracing imperfection, and letting yourself tell a story. Film isn’t perfect and that’s exactly why I love it so much!

It takes patience but it’s always worth it.

... Read moreFilm photography truly brings a different dimension to capturing moments compared to digital photography. With limited exposures—typically 24 to 36 shots per roll—you learn to value each frame and avoid the temptation to overshoot. This necessity to slow down helps photographers focus more deeply on composition, lighting, and subject, resulting in more thoughtful and meaningful photos. One of the most captivating aspects of film is that it requires patience. Unlike digital cameras where you can instantly review your shots, film photography demands that you put trust into your skills and instincts. This process helps build a stronger connection between the photographer and their subject, promoting mindfulness during the shoot. Embracing imperfection is another key reason why many enjoy film photography. Unlike the flawless precision often seen in digital images, film introduces grain, light leaks, and subtle color shifts that add character and personality to photos. These quirks tell stories and evoke nostalgia, making each image truly unique. The image content highlights a key lesson from film: “Film taught me to slowwww it down,” and “one take, no do overs. That’s the beauty!” This is a mindset beneficial not just in photography but in creative pursuits in general. It encourages presence and authenticity. Furthermore, shooting with film can inspire a deeper appreciation for the art of photography. It challenges photographers to understand exposure settings, lighting, and camera mechanics more intimately. Developing film through chemical processes also gives a hands-on, rewarding experience unavailable in purely digital workflows. For those interested in starting film photography, it's helpful to begin with a simple 35mm camera and affordable film stocks. Experimenting with different films and cameras can lead to discovering personal preferences and style. Online communities and forums like #filmphotography and #filmphotographer offer excellent resources, inspiration, and support. In summary, film photography’s beauty lies in its slower pace, the embrace of imperfection, and the authentic connection it fosters between photographer, subject, and moment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced shooter, film encourages a mindful, creative approach that yields captivating and timeless images.

here's a quick guide on how to unload film from two different 35mm film cameras! it's sooo much easier with an automatic winder lol but it's good to know how to get the film out correctly, because in the past i've had to manually wind up film and then ended up opening the back too e

there’s a lot of need out there that film school is a waste of money, and while you can ABSOLUTELY still succeed without it there are so many opportunities I would be missing without it. if this is a career path you’re interested in and are able to pursue i totally recommend going for it🫶 #
