Many people opt for a leave-in conditioner, but I found that a thick rinse-out conditioner helped cut through the matted hair more easily. The combing out dreadlocks process itself is not for the faint of heart – it requires immense patience. I worked on small sections, maybe an inch or two at a time. I started from the very end of the loc, saturating it with water and conditioner, and then gently began to pick it apart with the metal end of the comb. The goal isn't to rip through it, but to carefully unravel the matted hair. It's like forensic work for your hair! As I comb out each section, I would immediately detangle the combed out ends with my fingers and then a wide-tooth comb.
