Lemon8 I combed out my locs

2025/1/5 Edited to

... Read moreDeciding to comb out my locs was a huge step, and honestly, a bit daunting! For years, my locs were a part of my identity, but I found myself craving to rediscover my natural hair texture. If you're on the fence or just curious about the dreadlock comb out process, let me share my experience – it's a true hair transformation journey! First things first, preparation is key. I didn't just wake up one morning and start combing. I spent a few weeks deep conditioning my locs regularly, making sure they were as moisturized and pliable as possible. When it was time, I gathered my tools: a sturdy rat-tail comb with a strong metal end, plenty of conditioner (a cheap but slippery one works wonders!), a spray bottle filled with water, and some good hair clips to section my hair. Many people opt for a leave-in conditioner, but I found that a thick rinse-out conditioner helped cut through the matted hair more easily. The combing out dreadlocks process itself is not for the faint of heart – it requires immense patience. I worked on small sections, maybe an inch or two at a time. I started from the very end of the loc, saturating it with water and conditioner, and then gently began to pick it apart with the metal end of the comb. The goal isn't to rip through it, but to carefully unravel the matted hair. It's like forensic work for your hair! As I comb out each section, I would immediately detangle the combed out ends with my fingers and then a wide-tooth comb. This prevents immediate re-tangling and gives you a good idea of your true hair length. It took me several days, spread out over a couple of weeks, to completely lock comb out my entire head. My arms were tired, and my fingers were sore, but seeing my dark, curly hair emerge from beneath the locs was incredibly rewarding. Expect a LOT of shed hair – this is completely normal! All the hair that would naturally shed over the years while you had locs is now coming out. Don't be alarmed; it's not breakage if you've been gentle. After the comb out, my hair felt incredibly soft, but also a bit fragile. It was a completely different texture from what I remembered before I started my loc journey. My natural curly hair journey was restarting! I immediately did a deep conditioning treatment to replenish moisture and then focused on gentle styling. I learned quickly that my hair, now free from the locked state, needed extra love and care, especially at the combed out ends. I embraced low manipulation styles, focusing on moisture retention with regular deep conditioning and using oils to seal. This hair transformation truly felt like a rebirth for my strands, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything!
