War and Peace Review

This was a long listen. It was good and I can see why it is a must read and a classic. However, I want to physically read it and take notes. There are so many characters with their own plots going on that it was a little hard to keep track without having something physical to turn back to. But the overall message of what war does to people, how love changes things, different types of love, its's like war is needed but also unnecessary.

... Read moreHaving listened to the audiobook version narrated by Thandiwe Newton, I found myself deeply engaged but also challenged by the sheer volume of characters and interwoven storylines. This complex narrative structure is one of the many reasons Tolstoy’s work is considered a classic—it mirrors the chaos and unpredictability of real life, especially during times of war. I personally recommend pairing an audiobook experience with a physical copy of War and Peace if you can, or at least a detailed character list or summary. This helps immensely with keeping track of the multiple plots and understanding the evolution of key characters as they navigate their personal dilemmas and the larger historical upheavals around them. What stayed with me most was the exploration of different forms of love—from romantic to familial, and even patriotic love. Tolstoy paints war as a force that simultaneously destroys lives yet somehow draws out profound expressions of love and humanity. The book’s philosophical reflections on war question whether it is an inevitable part of human nature or something unnecessary that people strive to justify. Listening to the audiobook highlighted the emotional depth conveyed through narration, adding an audiobook-specific value to experiencing War and Peace. I found that Newton’s performance brought fresh nuance to the characters, making their internal struggles more vivid. For anyone approaching War and Peace, especially those considering an audiobook, my advice is to lean into the complexity rather than shy away. Take your time, maybe take notes, and allow yourself to reflect on Tolstoy's intricate portrayal of love, conflict, and humanity’s resilience during turbulent times.

Welp, it took me a full year to finish, but I did! I absolutely adored this book, though it had its flaws. I’m not big on battles and war analysis. Which, I KNOW, “war” is literally in the title. For that reason, it’s lower on my list than “Anna Kareninia”. Let me know your favorite/least favorite
