My parents never taught me how to invest.

So I had to figure it out myself after getting kicked out at 19.

These 3 things helped me buy a condo at 23 and build over $500k in assets before 30 — and none of them involve picking the next hot stock or getting lucky.

If you're overwhelmed by investing, start here.

Comment "STOCKS" and I'll show you what I own.

... Read moreStarting my investment journey without any guidance from my parents was intimidating, but focusing on three fundamental principles transformed my financial future. First, consistency was key. I committed to investing a fixed amount every month, no matter how small. Setting up automatic transfers to my investment account helped me stay disciplined and take advantage of dollar-cost averaging, smoothing out market fluctuations over time. Second, choosing low-cost, diversified investments like index funds made a huge difference. I used reputable brokerages such as Wealthsimple and Questrade, which provide user-friendly platforms and affordable options suitable for beginners. Specifically, I invested in popular ETFs like VOO/SPY and VFV/ZSP, which track broad stock markets and minimize single-stock risk. This approach allowed my portfolio to grow steadily without requiring me to pick individual stocks or time the market. Third, the mindset shift from seeking quick wins to focusing on long-term growth was essential. I stopped trying to get rich quickly or follow the latest trends. Instead, prioritizing financial education and patience enabled me to build assets steadily. Being young made it easier to take some calculated risks, but I always ensured I had a financial cushion and avoided debt traps. Additionally, tax-advantaged accounts like Roth IRAs for Americans and TFSAs for Canadians accelerated my wealth building by sheltering gains from taxes. Combining these accounts with disciplined investing amplified my growth potential. From my experience, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by investing, start simple. Open an account with a trusted brokerage, pick diversified ETFs, set up automatic monthly contributions, and commit to consistency. Over time, these small steps add up, and before you know it, you’ve built meaningful assets—even if you started with no guidance. Remember, investing isn’t about luck or timing, but steady habits and informed decisions.
