Throwing a large vase on the wheel

... Read moreIt's true, I absolutely love the challenge and satisfaction of throwing really large forms on the pottery wheel! There's something incredibly therapeutic and empowering about transforming a huge lump of clay into an elegant, tall vase. When I first started, the idea of throwing anything over a few pounds felt daunting. But with practice and a few key techniques, I've discovered the joy of pushing the limits of what the wheel can do. If you've ever admired a grand, wheel-thrown vase and wondered how it's done, you're in the right place. I'm excited to share some of my personal insights and methods for tackling these impressive ceramic projects. So, how do you actually throw a tall vase on the pottery wheel? It's definitely more than just scaling up a small pot. Here’s a breakdown of the steps I follow: Wedging & Centering: This is non-negotiable for large pieces. You need a well-wedged, consistent lump of clay. Centering a large amount of clay (say, 10-25 lbs) requires your whole body, not just your arms. I brace my elbows against my hips and use my body weight to push the clay into submission. Patience here is key – if it's not centered perfectly, you'll fight it the whole way up. Opening the Clay: Once centered, open up the clay to create the base of your vase. For tall forms, I usually start with a wider opening than I might for a standard bowl, ensuring a stable foundation. Make sure the floor is even and compressed to prevent S-cracks later. Pulling the Walls: This is where the magic (and challenge!) happens. For tall forms, I often do more pulls than usual, maybe 4-6, to gradually build height without losing strength. I focus on keeping my hands consistent, applying even pressure both inside and out. For the initial pulls, I don't try to go too wide; I focus on getting a solid, even cylinder. Building Height & Managing Clay: As you pull, you'll find the clay wants to collapse or become too thin. This is where bracing comes in. I often use a sponge or knuckle on the outside to support the wall as my inside hand lifts. Don't be afraid to 'cone up' the clay occasionally (bringing it back in) to re-compress it and regain strength before pulling up again. This is crucial for tall pieces. Shaping Your Vase: Once you have the desired height, you can start to gently shape the form. Do you want a classic bulbous belly, a straight cylinder, or a graceful neck? Remember to keep your movements slow and deliberate, supporting the walls as you adjust the profile. For a narrower neck, I use a technique called 'collaring,' gently bringing the clay in with my fingers or a rib. Refining the Rim & Base: Once the form is set, refine the rim. I usually cut a clean, even edge with a needle tool. Later, after it's leather-hard, I’ll trim the base to create a stable foot ring, which adds both stability and a finished look to the wheel-thrown vase. While wheel throwing is my passion for many large forms, it's worth mentioning that for truly colossal or uniquely shaped vases, coil building is another fantastic ceramic technique. Sometimes, the sheer volume of clay or an unconventional form simply exceeds the capabilities of the pottery wheel. Coil vases allow for incredible freedom in terms of scale and asymmetry, building up the form piece by piece. I've experimented with combining wheel-thrown bases with coiled upper sections for extra height and intricate details, offering a hybrid approach that truly unleashes creativity. Through my journey with ceramics, especially throwing large forms, I've picked up a few invaluable tips I wish I knew earlier: Clay Consistency: Use clay that's on the firmer side. Softer clay is harder to control and collapses more easily when building height. Water Management: Use just enough water to keep your hands gliding, but not so much that you're turning the clay into slip. Excess water weakens the walls. Consistent Speed: A steady wheel speed is your friend. Too fast, and you might lose control; too slow, and you might not get enough momentum for pulling. Patience is a Virtue: Don't rush! Each pull, each shaping movement needs to be deliberate. If you feel frustrated, step away for a moment. Brace Yourself: Seriously, use your body. Elbows on knees, hips against the wheel, whatever gives you stability. For tall pieces, I often use a piece of foam or an extra hand on the outside to brace the wall while I pull from the inside. Don't Fear Failure: You will have collapses. Your vase will warp. Your clay will get too thin. It’s all part of the learning process! Reclaim the clay and try again. Each 'failure' teaches you something new. Practice, Practice, Practice: Like any skill, throwing large or tall vases comes with consistent practice. Start with slightly larger amounts of clay than you're comfortable with, and gradually increase. My passion for creating these majestic wheel-thrown vases continues to grow with every piece. There’s nothing quite like stepping back and seeing a beautiful form emerge from a simple lump of clay. I hope these insights encourage you to try your hand at throwing larger pieces on your pottery wheel. Happy making!
