How I manage my anxiety

Here are 3 of my current strategies I use to tackle my anxiety:

- positive affirmations: I have my favorites written on a sticky note on my mirror so that it’s easy for me to remember to read them every day ✨

- therapy: I think therapy is something that needs to be normalized so much more in today’s society. I have seen a therapist on and off over the years based on if something is causing my anxiety to flare up or if it’s more manageable. 💗

- reading personal development books: this is an easy one to do in my spare time to keep my anxiety at bay. The power of now is a great book to help you learn how to stay present 🌱

... Read moreWhen it comes to managing anxiety, I've found that a multi-faceted approach works best for me. Beyond the core strategies I mentioned, I've discovered a few other practices that truly complement my journey towards greater peace and mental clarity. First, let's talk a bit more about affirmations. While simply reading them is a good start, I've learned that making them truly resonate is key. Instead of just saying "I am calm," I try to connect with the feeling behind the words. Sometimes, I'll stand in front of my mirror, look myself in the eye, and repeat an affirmation like "I am capable of handling whatever comes my way" or "My feelings are valid, and I choose to respond with kindness." This practice, often seen in the OCR as "PRACTICE DAILY AFFIRMATIONS," has transformed from a simple routine into a powerful self-compassion exercise. I also make sure my affirmations are in the present tense and positively framed, focusing on what I want to cultivate rather than what I want to avoid. Regarding therapy, I absolutely echo the OCR's sentiment: "Let's normalize getting professional help for mental health." For me, therapy isn't just for crises; it's a space for self-discovery and building coping mechanisms. I've explored different types, like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helped me challenge negative thought patterns, and even some mindfulness-based approaches. Finding the right therapist can feel daunting, but it's worth the effort. I usually look for someone whose approach aligns with my personal values and who I feel comfortable opening up to. Online platforms have made this much more accessible, allowing me to connect with therapists from the comfort of my home, especially during those times when leaving the house felt overwhelming. It’s been a crucial part of how I manage the times "when my anxiety gets unmanageable." And then there are personal development books. As the OCR highlights with "PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT BOOKS," these aren't just for self-help gurus! They've been incredible companions in understanding my own mind. Beyond 'The Power of Now,' which taught me the invaluable lesson of presence, I've found great comfort in books on Stoicism, which offer practical ways to manage emotions and focus on what's within my control. Books on mindfulness, self-compassion, and even neuroscience have provided me with a deeper understanding of anxiety, making it feel less like a mysterious monster and more like a learnable challenge. I often highlight passages and revisit them, turning theoretical knowledge into practical wisdom. Beyond these, I've integrated a few other things into my daily life. Movement is a big one. Even a short walk outdoors, as hinted by the OCR's mention of "physical Work," can drastically shift my mood. It doesn't have to be an intense workout; sometimes just stretching or a gentle yoga flow is enough to release pent-up tension. I also prioritize mindfulness and breathing exercises. Simple techniques like the 4-7-8 breathing method (inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8) can quickly calm my nervous system when I feel overwhelmed. I also try to take a few moments each day to just be – noticing my senses, the sounds around me, the feeling of my breath – which helps ground me in the present moment. Lastly, journaling has become a powerful outlet. Dumping all my anxious thoughts onto paper often helps me see them more clearly, reducing their intensity and helping me identify patterns. It’s like having a silent, understanding friend who always listens without judgment.
