💭 The Culture Shock I Didn’t Expect- 🇵🇷

Moving to Puerto Rico with my family was one of the best decisions we’ve made—but I’d be lying if I said there weren’t surprises along the way. From the school system, to how people drive here, to just trying to grocery shop or shop anywhere 😅—there was a LOT to adjust to.

Here’s what caught me off guard the most (and what I’ve grown to love 💛). My daughter had to switch from private school to homeschool, and that was a huge change… but she’s now learning Spanish so fast! even faster than me lol

Would I do it all over again? YES. But I wish someone had told me this stuff first.

Puerto Rico
2025/6/17 Edited to

... Read moreWhen we first arrived in Puerto Rico, the vibrant culture was immediately captivating, but I quickly realized that adjusting to daily life would be its own adventure. The original post just scratched the surface of the 'culture shock' we experienced, and honestly, I wish I'd had more insights before we packed our bags! One of the biggest eye-openers was definitely driving. You know how I mentioned the way people drive here? Well, let me tell you, it's a whole different ballgame. The OCR even caught my 'anxiety about drivers in Puerto Rico' – and it's true! Road rules can feel more like suggestions, and defensive driving is an absolute must. Expect a lot of horn usage (not always aggressive, sometimes just a 'hello' or a 'I'm here'), and don't be surprised by sudden lane changes or people pulling over anywhere. Learning to navigate the local roads took a good few months, but now I feel much more confident. My biggest tip? Leave extra time for everything, and remember that patience is your best co-pilot. Then there’s the school system and language barrier. Our daughter's transition was a huge part of our experience. Initially, we explored local schools, but found the curriculum and teaching styles varied significantly from what we were used to. This led us to the decision to homeschool, which, while a challenge, has been incredibly rewarding. Watching her quickly pick up Spanish, much faster than me, has been amazing – truly a testament to immersion! If you're considering moving here with kids, research the schooling options thoroughly, and be prepared for potential language challenges if your children aren't already bilingual. There are many resources for 'daughter learning Spanish' through immersion, which has been a silver lining for us. And oh, shopping! The original post hinted at the 'common experience of always encountering queues,' and it's so true. Whether it's the grocery store, the bank, or even just picking up a coffee, be prepared to wait. The pace of life here is generally slower, which can be lovely, but it takes some getting used to when you're accustomed to quick, efficient transactions. I've learned to embrace it – it's often a chance to observe local life or even practice my Spanish with cashiers. Don't expect every item you're used to finding in mainland stores; product availability can vary, and you might discover new local favorites instead. It’s all part of 'Living in Puerto Rico.' Overall, while these adjustments were initially a "culture shock," they've become part of our daily rhythm. My advice to anyone considering this move is to come with an open mind, a lot of patience, and a willingness to embrace the differences. It's a beautiful island with warm people, and the rewards of adapting far outweigh the initial hurdles.
