For example, you might find yourself holding back sharing small daily details not because you want to shut someone out but because it feels exhausting to engage. That initial decision to keep things small or neutral can set the tone for less connection overall.
Delaying responses also easily sneaks in. I used to notice myself reading messages and thinking, "I’ll reply later," especially when feeling mentally drained. What helped was learning to send quick, honest placeholder replies like, "I saw your message, I’ll get back to you soon." This simple step maintained connection without overwhelming me.
Avoiding certain conversations is a common and understandable defense mechanism. Sometimes discussions bring up uncomfortable feelings, so it's tempting to push them off. My advice is to break these into smaller, manageable pieces. Instead of tackling everything at once, focus on one aspect you feel ready to address. This approach keeps communication alive without it feeling too heavy.
The key lesson is not to judge yourself for pulling away; it’s a natural response when your energy is low. But by noticing these subtle signs early—like not sharing, delayed responses, or avoidance—you can gently steer back towards connection. Small consistent efforts can help close the gap before it grows. Sometimes, just acknowledging the pattern opens the door to understanding and healing in relationships.
i think what's worse is that I recognize im doing these things and i don't want to show up and participate anymore. It's people by proximity and those people i don't want to share/engage with anymore
