The Hardest Lesson I Learned From Depression

When I was 24, I was diagnosed with depression.

I thought the hardest part would be my mental health.

Looking back…

it wasn’t.

The Julia Shantal Way:

The hardest part was believing that the first man who stood by me…

had to be the man I should marry.

I confused gratitude with compatibility.

Someone can genuinely support you through one chapter of your life…

and still not be the right person to build the rest of your life with.

That was one of the hardest lessons I had to learn.

Gratitude is important.

But it isn’t a substitute for compatibility, emotional connection, or a healthy relationship.

Sometimes we stay because we feel we owe someone.

Not because we’re choosing the relationship from a place of peace.

... Read moreLiving through depression significantly shaped my perspective on relationships and self-worth. When I was in that vulnerable place, I naturally gravitated toward the first person who supported me emotionally. It felt reassuring at the moment, and I believed that gratitude toward their presence meant they were right for me long-term. But over time, I realized that gratitude and compatibility are very different. From experience, staying in a relationship out of a sense of obligation rather than genuine connection can prolong emotional distress. It took a great deal of self-reflection to recognize that even though someone stood by me during one chapter, it did not guarantee they were the best person to build my future with. One crucial insight I gained is the importance of choosing relationships from a place of inner peace and emotional health—not guilt, debt, or gratitude. I learned to differentiate true companionate love from the misplaced loyalty that sometimes masks unresolved personal needs. Compatibility, shared values, and emotional connection are essential foundations for a healthy partnership. Additionally, this experience taught me about self-abandonment, which happens when we prioritize others’ support and approval over our own well-being and happiness. Recognizing this helped me begin the process of healing and making more conscious relationship choices. If you’re navigating similar challenges, it’s worth exploring resources that unpack these dynamics, such as books on ending self-abandonment and understanding patterns with emotionally unavailable partners. Personal growth and healthier relationships come from learning to honor your emotional needs while appreciating support without mistaking it for destiny. Ultimately, depression taught me a profound lesson: gratitude is valuable but never a substitute for compatibility or emotional harmony. Choosing a partner wisely means ensuring the relationship aligns with your authentic self, fostering mutual respect, and supporting your long-term growth and happiness.
