WTF PULL-UPS
These things hurt but I had to challenge myself !
Okay, let's talk about the real aftermath of those 'WTF PULLUPS' I just put myself through! You know that burning, tearing sensation? That's exactly why I wanted to share my experience with what we gym fanatics affectionately call 'Turner Hände' – or simply, gymnast hands. It's not just a badge of honor; it's a real struggle sometimes, especially when you're pushing yourself to 'OUT TO GET HEAV' (heavy, healthy, heaven – pick your pain!). When I first started seriously challenging myself with pull-ups, I quickly realized my hands were taking the brunt of it. What are 'Turner Hände'? Imagine thick calluses forming in all the wrong places, sometimes tearing open, leaving raw, sensitive skin underneath. It’s painful, it makes everyday tasks like opening jars difficult, and it can even set back your training if you don't manage it. So, how do I try to deal with it? First, prevention is key. I always make sure to use chalk. It helps absorb sweat and provides a better grip, reducing friction that leads to tears. Some people swear by gymnastic grips or gloves, but I personally prefer to build up my hand strength and calluses naturally, just making sure they're maintained. Speaking of maintenance, I regularly use a pumice stone or a callus shaver – gently! – to keep those hard spots from getting too thick and ripping. It’s like filing your nails, but for your palms. After a particularly intense session, especially if I feel my hands are 'OUT TO GET HEAVY' with soreness, a good post-workout routine is crucial. I wash my hands thoroughly, then slather on a rich moisturizer. Hand balms designed for climbers or lifters are amazing because they're extra potent. If I do get a tear (and let's be honest, it happens), I clean it, apply an antiseptic, and bandage it up. Rest is also vital – sometimes you just need to give your hands a break to heal. It might sound like a lot of fuss for just doing pull-ups, but for anyone serious about bodyweight training, looking after your hands is non-negotiable. It means less pain, faster recovery, and more consistency in your workouts. So next time you're hitting those pull-ups, remember your hands are doing a lot of the work – treat them right, and they'll keep pushing you to new limits!
