Nighttime Habits That Make Me Feel Safe & Calm

I feel quite nervous when I sleep alone at home. The neighborhood is quiet and safe but I can’t stop thinking what if someone breaks in😂I may need to leave a light on or wake up during the night. My husband went to a one day camping trip last weekend, and I feel more comfortable this time after I did these:

1. Check garage door to make sure it’s closed.

2. Lock all other doors that can access the house.

3. Check camera app to make sure they’re on.

4. Spray some stress relief room spray or turn on diffuser with lavender essential oil.

5. Turn on some warm and cozy light.

6. Two pillows hug! I sleep between two pillows to feel comfortable and safe.

Maybe I’m a little dramatic but these help me feel safe and calm if I stay at home alone overnights.

Experts recommend a combination of practical safety measures and calming routines to manage nighttime anxiety effectively. Start with physical security checks such as ensuring all entry points like garage and house doors are securely locked. Utilizing modern technology like security camera apps allows remote monitoring of your home, providing a reassuring sense of control over your environment. Brands like Levoit offer reliable home monitoring systems ideal for this purpose. Aromatherapy also plays a significant role in promoting relaxation. Essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and spearmint, which can be used via room sprays or diffusers, help reduce stress and create a peaceful atmosphere. Scientific studies have shown that lavender oil has calming effects that can improve sleep quality. Lighting choices impact mood and comfort levels; warm and cozy lighting is preferable over harsh or bright lights, which can interfere with melatonin production critical for sleep. Creating a comfortable sleeping environment includes habits like hugging two pillows, which can provide physical and emotional comfort, simulating a sense of companionship and safety. Incorporating these habits into your nightly routine can enhance your feelings of security and tranquility. Combining safety checks, soothing scents, gentle lighting, and comforting physical sensations teaches your mind and body to recognize nighttime as a safe and calm period. Additional tips for those dealing with nighttime anxiety include playing soft ambient sounds or white noise to mask unsettling noises and engaging in calming pre-bedtime activities such as reading or meditation. If feelings of anxiety persist, consulting a mental health professional can offer further strategies tailored to your needs. By adopting these comprehensive nighttime habits, individuals living alone or those experiencing fear when alone can enjoy improved sleep quality and greater peace of mind through the night.
