Let’s Fill My Garden Bed 🪏

1st: Water your ground 💦. It’s been hot & dry in Arkansas. I decide to water the bottom to start the process.

2nd: Put your cardboard down & water that too.

3rd: Put in your brown material down. You can break it up for faster decomposition.

4th. Lay in your compost. I even layered in some scraps I been saving. I’ve been adding to this compost for a year now. It has grass clippings, food scraps, egg shells, paper, and dirt.

5th: Cover with your dirt. I utilized MiracleGro Garden Soil.

You can come back and add more dirt once the decomposition process has started.

What are some of your tips and tricks for your filling your gardening bed?

... Read moreFilling a garden bed correctly is essential for creating a thriving environment for your plants. This process improves soil structure, boosts nutrient availability, and promotes healthy root development. The technique described in the article involves layering various materials to encourage decomposition and enrich the soil naturally. Starting the process by watering the ground is crucial, especially in hot and dry conditions like those in Arkansas, as moist soil supports microbial activity necessary for decomposition. Placing cardboard next serves as a biodegradable weed barrier that also adds carbon to the soil as it breaks down. Adding brown materials such as dried leaves or straw further supplies carbon, balancing the nitrogen-rich green materials in compost. Breaking up brown materials speeds decomposition by increasing surface area for microbes. The compost layer provides essential nutrients and beneficial microorganisms, which enhance soil fertility. A well-maintained compost with ingredients like grass clippings, food scraps, eggshells, paper, and dirt, accumulated over time, ensures a rich and balanced nutrient supply. Covering all layers with quality soil, such as MiracleGro Garden Soil, finalizes the bed preparation. This soil acts as a medium for seeds and seedlings, offering necessary minerals while protecting the underlying decomposing materials. Gardeners can revisit and add more soil after decomposition begins to adjust levels and improve soil texture. This layering method is part of the sheet mulching or lasagna gardening technique, which reduces weed growth, retains moisture, and builds fertile soil naturally. In addition to these steps, gardeners are encouraged to monitor soil moisture regularly, practice crop rotation in raised beds, and use organic amendments to maintain soil health. Incorporating companion planting and mulching can further enhance productivity and pest resistance. By understanding and applying these principles, gardeners can create robust garden beds that support sustainable and productive gardening throughout the seasons.

An infographic titled 'WRONG DEPTH, WASTED ROOTS' illustrates optimal raised bed depths for various crops. It shows 6-inch beds for lettuce, radishes, herbs; 12-inch for peppers, bush beans, cucumbers; 18-inch for tomatoes, carrots, potatoes; and 24-inch for asparagus, sweet potatoes, and artichokes, emphasizing matching depth to root needs.
Pick the right height for a raised bed.
Every raised bed the same height means some crops get too little soil and others get more than they'll ever use. Each crop's root system needs a specific depth. Too shallow and roots hit bottom, fork, and starve the plant. Too deep and you're paying for soil that nothing reaches.
