In this journey, every woman's needs and preferences are unique, and my job is to closely observe and respond to subtle changes to help guide them through labor.
During labor, I noticed small shifts in my client's body language, such as leg movements that indicated radiating pain in her hips and thighs. To ease this discomfort, I used a massage ball on the affected areas, which can gently relieve tension and promote relaxation. Meanwhile, her partner contributed with gentle shoulder and neck massages, creating a united support system around her.
Counter pressure on the hips also helped to manage intensifying contractions, offering physical relief. We adapted to her needs by placing scented oils near her to facilitate inhalation during deep breathing, even if her hands were otherwise occupied, demonstrating how small adjustments can enhance comfort.
Positioning during labor is crucial, and this client requested to give birth in bed, which she accomplished successfully. I stood by to offer support and coaching, helping her release tension and coach through breathwork. Encouraging her to push in any position that felt natural ensured a more comfortable and effective delivery.
As a doula, I advocate for the mother’s choices when medical staff may have different opinions, enabling her to have confidence in her voice and decisions. Labor can be overwhelming, and I am there to encourage and remind her that she is capable, especially during moments when she feels she cannot continue.
In supporting unmedicated births, preparation, observing subtle cues, and adapting techniques in real time are essential. The use of tools such as a peanut ball for comfort, massage techniques, counter pressure, and breath coaching all contribute to a safer, more positive birthing experience.
Being an advocate, comforter, and coach, a birth doula helps both the mother and her partner feel empowered and supported from early labor to delivery. Witnessing my client meet all her birth goals — an unmedicated birth, giving birth in bed, pushing in comfort, and safe delivery of a healthy baby — reminds me why this work is so meaningful.
