How to Increase Your Study hours

It’s easy to only study for a couple minutes and get tired of the material. We all want to find ways we can sit and study for a longer period of time. Here are some things that helped me increase my study hours, while still absorbing information:

- Prioritize and Plan

- Try Different Techniques

- Set Some Ground Rules

- Set Clear Goals

- Stay Positive and Stay Committed

The good news is, a few strategic tweaks can dramatically help you increase your sitting hours, making your study sessions more effective and less frustrating. Here’s how I tackled this and what truly worked for me. First off, I learned that just 'trying harder' to sit still wasn't the answer. Instead, it was about making the sitting experience more productive and less daunting. My biggest breakthrough came with smart planning and prioritizing. I stopped just opening my books and hoping for the best. Now, I use a physical *planner*, like the one I have open to April, to map out my tasks. I write a clear to-do list for each session, detailing specific goals like 'get through ch. 4' or 'clear section 6-7 terms.' Knowing exactly what I need to accomplish before I even take my seat makes a huge difference. It removes the mental friction of deciding what to do next, allowing me to start and, more importantly, stay seated with purpose. Next, experimenting with different techniques was crucial for maintaining engagement during those longer stretches. Simply sitting and reading can lead to zoning out. I found that incorporating active study methods helped immensely. For example, using the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break) prevents burnout and makes the idea of increasing sitting hours feel less overwhelming. During my focused periods, I'd actively recall information by writing notes in my notebooks or explaining concepts aloud. This keeps my brain stimulated, making the time I spend sitting feel more impactful and less like a chore. Creating the right environment also plays a massive role in setting effective ground rules. My study desk is now my sanctuary. I make sure it’s tidy, with all my essentials—my tablet (often showing the time, like 10:22), *keyboard*, *pens*, and even some calming *potted plants*—within reach. Inspired by a little grid paper notebook where I jot down 'Study time rules,' I've implemented 'No phone' during study blocks and sometimes 'Only Classical music' to minimize distractions. Investing in comfortable headphones to block out external noise also significantly boosts my ability to focus and, by extension, increase my sitting hours without constant interruptions or urges to get up. Finally, setting clear, actionable goals and maintaining a positive, committed mindset transformed my study routine. Those small handwritten sticky notes titled 'STUDY GOALS' are not just decorations! Breaking down large tasks into smaller, achievable targets, like 'review sections 6-7,' gives me a sense of accomplishment and keeps me motivated. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. I allow myself short, refreshing breaks – a quick stretch or a glass of water – before returning to my *study desk*. This consistent effort and determination to 'stay positive and stay committed!' has been key. You might not instantly double your sitting hours, but with these tips, you'll gradually build the stamina and focus needed to achieve your academic goals.
