From my personal experience, what makes this island truly special is how it blends cultural heritage with rich biodiversity. Walking or cycling around the island, you can still see remnants of the old granite quarries, which played a crucial role in building early landmarks like the Johor Causeway and Raffles Lighthouse. Knowing this gives extra depth to the landscape — these shimmering quarry lakes are not just scenic spots but historic sites rejuvenated by nature. Beyond its history, Pulau Ubin offers a refreshing escape from Singapore’s urban hustle. The quiet trails through regenerating forests are home to fascinating wildlife such as kingfishers, eagles, monitor lizards, and hornbills. I’ve often spotted these creatures during my visits, adding an element of surprise and wonder to each trip. It’s a vivid reminder of how nature can reclaim and heal spaces once heavily altered by human activity. Interacting with the local uncles and aunties, many of whom have lived through the island’s quarrying days, enriches the experience too. Their stories and memories provide a heartfelt connection to Pulau Ubin’s kampung lifestyle, making visitors appreciate the island’s cultural depth. Supporting these local communities by buying snacks or souvenirs feels meaningful and helps preserve this heritage. For travelers looking to combine outdoor adventure with heritage appreciation, Pulau Ubin is an unbeatable choice. Whether kayaking through the mangroves, exploring the trails, or simply soaking in the tranquil views at sunset, you’re engaging with a rare natural heritage site. It’s a place where history, community, and wildlife converge — ideal for those wanting more than just a weekend trip but a journey into Singapore’s soul.

Can you really trust family? I couldn’t.
At the mere age of 7, I vividly remember my dad telling me, “kakak, in this world you cannot trust anyone. Not me, not mama, not adik, not even yourself.” I remember asking myself, then who am I supposed to trust? At that age, I didn’t fully understand it. I was just confused. The words came and w
