... Read moreCentipedes are fascinating yet unsettling creatures that often provoke strong reactions because of their many legs and swift movements. In Japan, encounters with large centipedes can be surprisingly common, especially in rural or humid areas where they thrive. Despite their creepy appearance, centipedes play an important role in controlling pest populations since they are carnivorous and feed on other insects. I remember first spotting a giant centipede climbing up the wall inside a cabin during a trip, and it truly startled me more than any horror movie character like Sadako. Their speed and sudden appearance make them quite intimidating. However, centipedes are usually shy and avoid humans, biting mostly in defense when provoked. From a biological standpoint, centipedes have elongated bodies with many segments, each sporting a pair of legs, which can sometimes appear more than 100. This unique anatomy allows them to move quickly and navigate through tight spaces. Some Asian species, including those found in Japan, can deliver venomous bites that might be painful but rarely dangerous to humans. For those interested in insects and entomology, observing centipedes offers insight into natural pest control and biodiversity. If you want to minimize encounters, keeping living spaces dry and sealed can discourage their presence. Understanding these creatures beyond their scary reputation helps to appreciate their ecological value and reduces fear through knowledge.
