Being away from your home in another country for 3 weeks takes a toll on your mental health as well. Being out of your own space and comfort is hard. #allisonmae #vium #elsalvador #police #homesick
Spending three weeks away from home, especially in a different country like El Salvador, can deeply affect your mental health. The feelings of homesickness often stem from missing familiar surroundings, loved ones, and the comfort of your personal space. In my experience, acknowledging these feelings is the first step toward coping with them. One effective strategy I found helpful is creating a small personal corner in your temporary space with familiar items such as photos, a favorite blanket, or a book. This helps establish a sense of comfort amidst unfamiliar surroundings. Another useful approach is maintaining a routine similar to the one you have at home, such as set times for meals and sleep, which can reduce feelings of disorientation. Staying connected with family and friends through video calls or messages also plays a key role in alleviating loneliness. Additionally, immersing yourself in local culture and activities, like visiting local markets or attending community events, can shift your focus and enrich your experience. It's important to recognize that stress from travel, especially when combined with the pressure of cultural differences or unexpected challenges (like interactions with local authorities), can intensify feelings of homesickness. Practicing mindfulness or journaling your experiences helped me process emotions and build resilience during the stay. Overall, while being away from home for an extended period is challenging, employing these personal strategies fosters mental well-being and transforms the experience into a meaningful journey.
