GEL X FILL TUTORIAL 💅🏽

1. File off existing gel polish. Note: File off the polish only. Avoid filing into the structure of the extension.

2. Clip off extra length and hand file into your desired shape.

3. Use the e-file to clean off dead skin from the nail plate near the cuticle.

4. Remove dirt and oil with alcohol. Note: I don’t use “dehydrator”. Alcohol is enough for me. If you prefer to use it, please do! You’d apply dehydrator after cleaning off the nail.

5. Apply protein bond. Protein bond is a primer that helps with adhesion and retention of your nail enhancements. Apply to the natural nail only.

6. Use builder gel to fill in the new growth area. Gently drag down the gel to make it even across the extension. Before curing, apply additional gel to the center of the nail to create a bit more structure in the apex area. Cure. Note: This gel self-levels, so theres no additional blending required, and no need to file or buff after curing.

** I only do 1 fill per set. Gel x extensions are short term, and should be soaked off. This fill hack is great when you need a refresh, but can’t do a new set right away. 🫶🏽

... Read moreDoing your own Gel X fills at home has been a total game-changer for me! It's not just about saving money, which is a huge bonus, but also about the convenience of keeping my nails looking pristine without always needing a full salon appointment. If you're wondering about the ins and outs of Gel X fills, let me share some more of my insights and tips. When is a Gel X Fill the Right Choice? One of the most common questions I get asked is, "Can you get a fill on Gel X nails?" The answer is yes, but with a caveat! As the original post mentions, Gel X extensions are generally considered short-term. I personally stick to doing just one fill per set. This is because Gel X tips are applied over your natural nail, and with growth, the structure can change. A fill is perfect when you have noticeable growth at the cuticle area, but your existing extension is still securely attached with no significant lifting or damage. It's a fantastic hack for when you need a refresh but don't have the time or immediate need for a brand new set. It significantly extends the wear time of your manicure, buying you a few more weeks of fabulous nails! Deeper Dive into Nail Prep: Beyond the Basics Proper preparation is the secret sauce to a long-lasting fill. While the original steps cover the essentials, I want to emphasize a few things based on my experience. When you're filing off the existing gel polish, really take your time. You want to remove all the color and top coat, but avoid thinning out the actual Gel X extension itself. This is crucial for maintaining its strength. For cuticle care, using an e-file to gently clean off dead skin is incredibly effective, but if you're new to it, start with a very fine grit bit and go slow to prevent any damage. As for cleaning, alcohol works great for me, but I've had friends who swear by a dedicated nail dehydrator, especially if they have oily nail beds. If you notice your fills aren't lasting, a dehydrator might be a good addition to your routine after the alcohol wipe. It helps remove any lingering oils and moisture, creating a perfect canvas for your protein bond. Mastering Builder Gel Application for a Seamless Fill Applying the builder gel is where you truly blend the old with the new. When you're dragging the gel down to even it across the extension, try to create a smooth transition. Think of it as seamlessly merging the new growth area with the existing Gel X. The key to that perfect, durable structure is the apex. Adding that bit of extra gel to the center of the nail isn't just for looks; it provides the strength needed to prevent breaks and lifting. Don't be afraid to add a small bead of gel and let it self-level for a moment before curing. This helps create a beautiful, natural curve. If your gel doesn't self-level perfectly, a small, flat brush can help you gently guide it into place before curing. Always remember to cap the free edge with a thin layer of builder gel for extra durability. Troubleshooting Common Fill Issues Even with the best technique, you might encounter issues. If you experience lifting after a fill, it's often due to insufficient prep (not cleaning thoroughly enough, or cuticle bits left behind) or getting gel on the cuticle during application. Always clean up any gel that touches your skin before curing! Another common issue is unevenness or bubbles. Bubbles can happen if you're mixing the gel too vigorously or if your brush motion is too aggressive. For unevenness, ensure your builder gel is self-leveling, and take your time to allow it to settle before curing. If it's still uneven, a gentle buff after curing (if your gel allows) can smooth things out before applying a top coat. Gel X Fill vs. Full Soak-Off: Making the Choice While fills are fantastic for a quick refresh, it's important to know when to opt for a full soak-off and new set. If you have significant lifting, damage to the Gel X tip, or if you've already done one fill and have considerable growth, it's usually best to soak off. This prevents stress on your natural nail and allows for a fresh start, ensuring the integrity and health of your nails. The article accurately points out that Gel X extensions should ultimately be soaked off, and a fill is a great hack when a new set isn't immediately feasible. For those interested in strengthening their natural nails under extensions, some people even use BIAB (Builder in a Bottle) as a base or for their fills, which offers similar benefits to builder gel in terms of strength and flexibility. I sometimes even use my favorite BIAB product for fills, especially if I want extra reinforcement.
