One thing I’ve learned working at Target is how the store hierarchy is structured — and it’s actually pretty interesting once you understand the roles!
👩💼 Store Director (SD) — The head of the store. They oversee everything, set strategy, and are ultimately responsible for performance. Fun fact: SDs are one of the only salaried roles in the store.
📈 ETLs (Executive Team Leads) — Report directly to the Store Director. Each ETL manages a major area of the store, including HR, operations, or specific departments. ETLs are also salaried and act as the bridge between leadership strategy and the floor.
👩🏫 Team Leads (TLs) — The first role that counts as official leadership. TLs oversee specific workcenters (Beauty, GM, Fulfillment, etc.), train team members, and keep shifts running smoothly.
🎨 Visual Merchandiser / PML (Presentation & Merchandising Lead) — These two roles are pretty equal, and they focus on presentation: endcaps, displays, floor sets, and making sure the store looks shoppable.
🎯 Team Members (TMs) — That’s me! We’re the backbone of the store — running freight, zoning, helping guests, and supporting leadership every shift.

An ETL for General Merchandise might be planning how a new seasonal set will look across multiple 'target store aisles,' while the ETL for Human Resources is ensuring we have enough team members to cover all shifts and that everyone feels supported. They're looking at the bigger picture, making sure their department aligns with the Store Director's overall vision. The 'target organizational structure' isn't just a chart on a wall; it's how we function every single day. The Visual Merchandiser, for instance, isn't just about making things pretty; they're thinking about flow and how to make the store shoppable, tying directly into queries about 'inside target store images' and the overall 'target store background.' Beyond the Store Director, there's also the broader corporate structure, with District Senior Directors overseeing multiple stores, but for us on the store level, the SD is the top of the pyramid. It's a supportive environment, and it makes you appreciate the thought that goes into managing such a large-scale retail operation.
