Things I learned the hard way when I became a mama

I feel like when we learn that we are going to become a mama that things will stay somewhat the same, maybe that was just me 😅 but I wanted to just say a few things I had to learn the hard way when I first got pregnant. There’s so many expectations and “rules” to becoming a mama when really it’s a learning experience.. as your child gets older you will learn more about him/ her. Mistakes will be made it’s all part of it. Breathe! You got this 🩷

... Read moreWhen I first became a mama, I seriously thought I had it all figured out, or at least that some things would just naturally fall into place. Boy, was I wrong! Navigating motherhood, especially with a little one (or sometimes even as a mama of 2, like some of us!), throws curveballs you never anticipate. It's not just about sleepless nights; it's a complete transformation of your entire life, and it comes with its own unique set of struggles. One of the hardest lessons I learned was about friendships. It sounds harsh, but at some point in time, you might lose some friends. And honestly, it's okay. You learn who your real ones are – those who show up, understand your new reality, or at least try to. For those struggling with this, reach out to other new moms, join local groups, or even online communities. Building a new 'village' is crucial, especially if your traditional support system isn't what you expected or if you're navigating this journey without your own mother. Building a network of women who get it can be an absolute lifeline. They become your sounding board, your cheerleaders, and sometimes, just someone to share a messy moment with. Then there's the monumental task of trying to ditch all expectations. Seriously, throw them out the window! Every child is different, and what works for one baby or one family might not work for yours. I spent so much time comparing myself to others, thinking I was failing because my baby wasn't sleeping through the night at X months, or because I couldn't keep my house perfectly tidy. It’s a trap! Your journey is unique, and your best is truly all that matters. Don't let social media or well-meaning advice make you doubt your instincts. And speaking of advice, let's talk about judgment. It's inevitable that some moms might judge the way you choose to parent your babies. This one hit me hard. Whether it’s about feeding, sleep training, or discipline, everyone has an opinion. But you know your baby better than anyone. If it's not hurting them and you're parenting from a place of love, then you do you! Develop a thick skin, practice polite deflections, and remind yourself that your parenting choices are valid. Protecting your peace and your family's well-being is paramount. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly: breathe! You got this. Some days will be harder than others, no doubt. Motherhood is exhausting, emotionally and physically. I remember days where just making it to bedtime felt like winning an Olympic medal. This is why having supportive friends and family definitely helps. Don't be afraid to ask for help, whether it's for an hour of childcare, someone to bring a meal, or just a listening ear. Sometimes, just admitting you're overwhelmed can lighten the load. Remember, motherhood is exhausting but also incredibly beautiful. Lean into the messy, cherish the small victories, and never forget the strength you possess.
