Winter Homeschool Adventures
I get asked often, “Where do you go during the winter? How do you stay active in the rain and cold? Why don’t you slow down when the sun goes away and stay inside?” The truth?? We go everywhere and anywhere in the cold and rain. Nothing really changes for us. We do all our normal things and hit all our usual spots. State parks, wildlife refuges, national parks, and BLM land. The only thing that DOES change is the gear. It’s IMPERATIVE to have the proper gear when hitting the outdoors in less than fair weather. And gear doesn’t have to be expensive either! For example, I bought a stroller rain cover on Amazon for like $8. Also, I keep head to toe rain gear for each kid and myself in the truck at all times and at least three pairs of extra clothes. A water tight rain suit off of Amazon does WONDERS and you can buy it three times bigger than your kiddo so that they can grow in it.
Here’s the bottom line, our adventures don’t change because I am raising boys that are comfortable in uncomfortable weather. I am raising them to see the raw beauty in a rainstorm and to appreciate the mystical magic of the drizzling dense fog. Even now, my three year old knows that the ducks move best when they have rain cover and that the Tule Elk fight the most during the colder months. I want my boys to understand that the world isn’t always comfortable, but if you know where to go, it’s usually beautiful.
Get geared up and get out there. Exposure to the world is my first line of homeschooling.
