I can count on one hand the friends I have, and in total, I have three. Life didn’t bless me with many friends. Instead, it blessed me with one amazing friend in every decade of my life who continues to shape me in meaningful ways and who I still can count on today.
In my teens, I was blessed with a friend who taught me kindness, generosity, and how to live in the moment.
In my 20s, I was blessed with a friend who taught me how to stand up for myself, to quiet the naysayers, and to live authentically as myself.
Now, in my 30s, I’m blessed with a friend who encourages me to try new things, think outside of the box, and embrace discomfort as part of growth.
I do not have many friends. Instead, I have individuals who arrived in my life at exactly the right time. Individuals who I never had to doubt their love and friendship, who poured into me, challenged me, accepted me, and helped me become more of who I’m meant to be.
I used to think I was unlucky, watching others surrounded by a crowd of friends. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize that I was never unlucky. I was just blessed differently.

Many people find themselves measuring their social circles against others, feeling a sense of inadequacy when surrounded by large groups of friends. However, some individuals experience moments of enlightenment, realizing that true friendships aren't defined by quantity but by the depth of connections.
Studies indicate that having a few close friends can provide a wealth of emotional support, understanding, and comfort. These relationships often give individuals a sense of purpose and belonging, contributing positively to mental health and overall well-being.
In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining meaningful friendships can be challenging. Life changes, such as moving to a new city, transitioning jobs, or starting families, can limit opportunities for social interactions. It’s crucial for individuals to focus on nurturing existing friendships and staying connected through regular check-ins, shared activities, or even digital communication.
Moreover, the idea of “quality over quantity” can translate into our relationships in various ways. One close friend who fully understands your struggles can be more beneficial than a group of acquaintances with whom you share superficial interactions. As people age, they often come to appreciate the friends who challenge them, instill positivity, and promote personal growth. These friendships tend to be characterized by acceptance and encouragement, enabling us to evolve into better versions of ourselves.
Ultimately, the journey of friendship is one of personal reflection. By embracing the unique bond with a few special individuals, we can cultivate a supportive environment, celebrate shared experiences, and learn to navigate life’s challenges together. It is about cherishing those who were placed in your life at the right time, recognizing their impact, and being thankful for the blessings that come from such connections.
