FREE APPS FOR CREATING BOOK COVERS

#1 CANVA

The app I use for most of my covers, it allows you to do it all, add text, images, affects, stickers. It also has a very easy to use interface and very beginner friendly. If you want to make printable covers there’s also an option for that as well.

Be advise there is a subscription that prevents you from accession certain things but it is not necessary to create a great book cover.

#2 PHONTO

This app I solely use if I want a cool looking title. It has dozens of different fonts and you can even insert new ones off the web. It has intricate customization options for texts that make it a great app for book covers.

#3 PICSART

Picsart is a great editing app. You can blur, combine, and/or add any 👍Pros :effect to whatever you like. I use this if I want to combine two images seamlessly together. This app also has an available subscription that prevents you from using certain things but again, not the most necessary thing to have to create a stunning cover.

Suggestion:

Usually when I create book covers, I end up using all 3 apps for one book cover. Canva for the cover size and design, Picsart for the effect or overlay, and Phonto for the title.

I hope this was useful!

... Read moreCreating a captivating book cover doesn't have to break the bank or require complex software. From my own experience, these free apps have been game-changers in crafting eye-catching designs that truly represent my stories. If you're wondering how to get started or just want to refine your DIY cover skills, here's a deeper dive into how I leverage Canva, Phonto, and Picsart. Canva: Your Foundation for a Stunning Book Cover Canva is truly an all-in-one online graphic design tool. It's where I begin almost every book cover project. Its user-friendly interface makes it ideal for setting up the basic layout and structure. First, I choose the right dimensions—whether it's for an ebook, print paperback, or hardcover, Canva has custom size options that ensure my cover looks professional on any platform. I love browsing through their extensive library of user-friendly templates for inspiration, then customizing them to fit my genre and style. You can easily drag and drop elements, choose from a vast collection of free stock photos and illustrations, and experiment with different background textures. Even without the paid subscription, there are plenty of high-quality assets to create a strong visual foundation. It's perfect for getting that initial concept locked down. Phonto: Mastering the Art of Text on Photos Once I have my background and main images in place (often from Canva or another source), I switch to Phonto for the typography. This app excels at adding text to photos and is a must-have for designing striking titles. What sets Phonto apart is its incredible variety of fonts – literally hundreds are built-in, and you can even import new ones you've downloaded from the web! The level of customization for text styles is unmatched. I can adjust letter spacing, line height, add shadows, strokes, gradients, and even curve text to fit a specific design element. For a book cover, the title and author name are crucial, and Phonto allows me to ensure they are legible, stylish, and impactful. It's surprisingly intuitive to navigate, making advanced text effects accessible to everyone. This is where the title really comes alive and grabs attention. Picsart: Adding Visual Flair and Depth Picsart is my secret weapon for adding those finishing touches and intricate visual effects that elevate a book cover from good to great. Described as a powerful app for editing photos and book covers, it offers robust tools for layering images, applying unique filters, and blending different elements seamlessly. I often use Picsart to combine multiple images, create interesting overlays, or add subtle effects like blurs and vignettes that set the mood. Its collage feature is also fantastic if I want to incorporate a series of smaller images into a cohesive background. For example, if I have a character image and a scenic background, I'll use Picsart to blend them organically, making sure the lighting and colors match. The app's ability to manipulate individual layers gives me precise control over the final look, making sure every detail contributes to the overall narrative of the cover. My Integrated Workflow: Bringing It All Together My typical book cover design process involves using all three apps in sequence. I start in Canva for the overall layout and background. Then, I move to Picsart to refine images, add effects, and ensure all visual elements are perfectly blended. Finally, I use Phonto to add and meticulously style the title, author name, and any taglines. This multi-app approach allows me to leverage the unique strengths of each tool, resulting in a polished and professional-looking book cover without spending a dime on premium software. It's a bit of a dance between the apps, but the results are always worth it! Beyond the Apps: Essential Book Cover Design Tips Even with the best tools, a great book cover also relies on solid design principles. Pay attention to typography – choose fonts that match your genre and are easy to read. Consider your color palette; colors evoke emotion and can significantly impact how your cover is perceived. Finally, always think about your target audience: what kind of imagery and style will appeal most to them? These apps make the execution easy, but a strong concept is still key. Embrace the creative process, and don't be afraid to experiment!
