Spicy Sweet & Sour BBQ Chicken Bowls
Ingredients
* 2 lbs chicken, cut into bite-sized pieces
* 1 bag green beans (or any vegetable you like)
* Cooked rice, for serving
* Green onions, sliced, for topping
* Kinders Japanese BBQ Sauce
* Sweet chili sauce (a few drizzles)
* Chili crunch oil, to taste (I use 2–3 spoonfuls)
* Soy sauce, a few splashes
* Toasted sesame oil, a drizzle
* 5–6 tsp minced garlic (or 5–6 frozen garlic cubes)
* 5–6 tsp minced ginger (or 5–6 frozen ginger cubes)
* A few splashes of water
Directions
1. Cook the chicken in a large skillet until it’s fully cooked.
2. Add the garlic and ginger. (If using fresh, that’s about 5–6 teaspoons each.)
3. Pour in enough Japanese BBQ sauce to generously coat the chicken. You want it nice and saucy—not just lightly glazed, but not swimming in sauce either.
4. Drizzle a little sweet chili sauce around the pan.
5. Add the chili crunch oil to taste (I usually use 2–3 spoonfuls), a few splashes of soy sauce, a drizzle of toasted sesame oil, and a few splashes of water to loosen the sauce.
6. Stir in your partially cooked vegetables and continue cooking until everything is heated through and the sauce thickens.
7. Serve over rice and top with sliced green onions #DinnerIdeas #chicken #easydinner #takeout #chinesefood
One of the reasons I love making Spicy Sweet & Sour BBQ Chicken Bowls is how quickly and easily you can customize the dish to your liking. While the original recipe calls for Kinders Japanese BBQ Sauce, sweet chili sauce, and chili crunch oil, I often experiment with different sauces to find the perfect balance of heat and sweetness. For example, sometimes I swap the sweet chili sauce for a homemade pineapple glaze, which adds a fruity tang that complements the garlic and ginger beautifully. When it comes to vegetables, green beans are a great choice because they cook quickly and provide a satisfying crunch, but you can easily substitute or add veggies like snap peas, bell peppers, or broccoli for extra color and nutrition. I like to parboil the vegetables separately before adding them to the chicken so their vibrant colors stay fresh and they finish cooking evenly. Garlic and ginger are the backbone of this dish, giving it a robust aroma and depth of flavor that's hard to beat. I always use fresh minced garlic and ginger when I can, but if you're pressed for time, the frozen cubes mentioned in the recipe work just as well and help keep kitchen prep quick and mess-free. An important tip is to monitor the consistency of the sauce as it reduces. Adding small splashes of water helps prevent it from becoming too thick or sticking to the pan. The final drizzle of toasted sesame oil adds a nutty finish that rounds out the profile well. Serving these bowls over freshly cooked rice makes the dish feel hearty and complete. For a more wholesome twist, try using brown rice or cauliflower rice to boost fiber intake. Lastly, topping with sliced green onions adds a fresh, mild sharpness that contrasts nicely against the rich, spicy, and tangy sauce. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on top if you want an eye-catching presentation and a bit of extra texture. This recipe is perfect for anyone looking for a flavorful homemade meal that rivals takeout, with ingredients commonly found at home. It’s a great way to enjoy a taste of Chinese-inspired BBQ chicken bowls without spending hours in the kitchen.
