My favorite waterfall in Iceland

2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreIceland is truly the Land of Fire and Ice, and its waterfalls are absolutely mesmerizing! I've been lucky enough to explore many, and while I have my personal favorite (which I hinted at!), I wanted to share more insights for anyone planning their own Icelandic adventure. Whether you're chasing major landmarks or seeking hidden gems, there's a waterfall experience for everyone. When you think of Icelandic waterfalls, a few iconic names probably come to mind, and for good reason! Seljalandsfoss, where you can actually walk behind the cascading sheet of water, is an absolute must-do. It’s particularly breathtaking during a summer sunset. Then there’s the powerful Skógafoss, often graced with vibrant rainbows stretching across its mist. And of course, the golden falls of Gullfoss, part of the famous Golden Circle, which plunges into a deep canyon. These are fantastic starting points for any trip and definitely live up to their 'major' and 'must-see' reputations, offering truly unforgettable views. But for those of us who love to wander off the main tourist trails, Iceland holds countless hidden waterfall treasures. My personal favorite, for example, is often tucked away, requiring a bit more effort to reach, but the reward is pure magic and tranquility. Exploring these less-known spots, like Gljúfrabúi (often overlooked despite being right next to Seljalandsfoss!) or some of the smaller, unnamed cascades in the Highlands, offers a completely different, more intimate experience. It's truly like finding a secret slice of paradise, where you can feel a deeper connection to nature without the crowds. Visiting Iceland's waterfalls in summer is generally the easiest and most popular time. The longer daylight hours mean you can visit more sites, and the weather is milder, making hikes to even more remote falls enjoyable. The melting glaciers contribute to the incredible volume of water, making the falls particularly spectacular and roaring. It’s also when you might spot puffins near coastal waterfalls if you're lucky enough to combine your waterfall hunt with some birdwatching! To make the most of your waterfall chasing, here are a few tips I've learned: Always wear waterproof gear – a jacket, pants, and especially good waterproof hiking boots are non-negotiable. The spray from these powerful falls can drench you in seconds! Bring a portable charger for your phone; you'll be taking endless photos, and battery life can drain quickly in the cold. Remember to respect nature; stay on marked paths and don’t leave any trash behind. Some of the hidden ones might require a short hike over uneven terrain, so comfortable shoes with good grip are a must. Early mornings or late evenings are often the best times to avoid crowds, even at the popular spots, giving you that peaceful, personal experience. Happy waterfall hunting!

Iceland is one of my favorite countries I’ve ever visited. Here are 10 stops I think every traveler should visit their first time to Iceland. 1) Kirkjufell (Title shot) - west fjords - This whole area is beautiful! But this mountain is stunning (even in the pouring rain). 2) Silfra (photo 2)
