Prepare a solution of water glass by mixing sodium silicate powder with water (typically one part sodium silicate to nine parts water). The eggs need to be fully submerged in this solution, which forms a protective coating over the eggshells, sealing pores and preventing bacteria from entering. Over months, I noticed that eggs stored this way do not dry out or lose their usability, maintaining freshness and taste closer to fresh eggs than those kept in a refrigerator. This technique is especially useful for people who raise chickens or buy eggs in bulk, as it reduces waste and trips to the store. Just ensure you keep the jar in a cool, dark place for best results. One handy tip is to always mark the date you stored the eggs on the container. Although water glass can preserve eggs for approximately a year, it’s good practice to check eggs before cooking by smelling or performing the float test in water. Overall, preserving eggs with water glass is economical, environmentally friendly, and surprisingly simple. It’s a great tool for pantry stocking and for anyone interested in traditional food preservation methods.
