🚨Twenty years ago, many believed Bernadette Vander Meer’s death was a tragic hiking accident after she fell nearly 1,200 feet from Angels Landing in Zion National Park.
Now, investigators say it was murder.
David Vander Meer, a former youth pastor and school counselor, has been charged with murder and insurance fraud after authorities allege he groomed and sexually abused a girl in his church youth group beginning when she was just 14 years old. Prosecutors say he wanted to be with the girl and allegedly told her the only way they could be together was if Bernadette “was not alive.”
Investigators allege that after the girl ended their relationship, David took Bernadette on an anniversary hike in August 2006 and pushed her off the cliff. He collected more than $567,000 in life insurance after her death, later rekindled the relationship with the girl, and eventually married her.
The case went cold for years until new tips in 2022 led investigators to reopen it. He was finally charged nearly 20 years later.
However, David Vander Meer never made it to arraignment. Authorities say he died by suicide shortly after the charges were filed.
If these allegations are true, it’s heartbreaking to think that justice came so close, only for him to escape facing a courtroom. My heart goes out to Bernadette, the victim who was allegedly groomed as a child, and everyone whose lives were forever changed by this tragedy.
