How to Move on From a Breakup

2024/12/18 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I went through my toughest breakup, the idea of a 'grieving period' felt overwhelming. It truly felt like the end of a relationship was a death, and I learned that all deaths require a grieving period. Those first 30 days were a blur, but looking back, I can see distinct phases and things that really helped me move on from a breakup. Week 1: Embrace the Shock & Let Yourself Grieve (Days 1-7) The first few days, for me, were about pure survival. It felt like a deep loss, and I had to acknowledge that. Don't try to be strong; just let yourself feel the feelings. The OCR mentioned that emotions like 'guilt, shame, sadness, frustration, and anger' are all valid, and I can attest to that. I spent a lot of time crying, just letting it all out. It's okay to feel completely gutted. This isn't the time for big decisions or trying to 'fix' things. Focus on basic needs: eating (even if it's just comfort food), sleeping (even if it's restless), and perhaps having a trusted friend nearby. I remember just allowing myself to be still, acknowledging the pain of the loss. This initial grieving period is crucial. Week 2: Diving into the Emotional Rollercoaster (Days 8-14) After the initial shock, the intense emotions really started to surface. I'd swing from sadness to anger, then back to a deep sense of shame or guilt. It’s hard, but remember, 'all these emotions are valid'. I found journaling incredibly helpful during this time. Writing down everything I felt, without judgment, was a huge release. It helped me process the anger I felt towards my ex, the sadness for what was lost, and even the guilt for things I thought I could have done differently. Talking to a therapist or a close friend who could just listen without trying to 'fix' me was also invaluable. This is a critical time for healing from a breakup, and processing these feelings is key. Week 3: Rebuilding Your Foundation (Days 15-21) By week three, I started to feel a tiny shift. The waves of grief were still there, but perhaps not as constant. This was when I gently started to re-establish some routine. Small things, like making my bed every morning, going for a short walk, or cooking a simple meal, felt like huge victories. It wasn't about pretending I was fine, but about creating small pockets of normalcy. This is a time to focus on yourself, your physical and mental well-being. I tried to rediscover hobbies I enjoyed before the relationship or even try new ones. It’s about reminding yourself who you are outside of that partnership. Week 4: Glimmers of Hope & Moving Forward (Days 22-30) As the first month came to a close, I noticed glimmers of hope. It wasn't that the pain was gone, but it had dulled, and I felt a bit more resilient. I started to set small, achievable goals, like planning an outing with friends or signing up for a new class. I also began to reflect on what I learned from the relationship, not to dwell, but to grow. This phase is about looking forward, not back. Remember, healing from a breakup isn't linear. There will be good days and bad days, even after 30 days. The most important thing I learned was to honor my own pace and continue to 'feel the feelings' as they came. This journey is uniquely yours, and giving yourself grace throughout the grieving process is the greatest gift you can offer yourself.

How to finally move on from a breakup & start feeling like yourself again ❤️‍🩹
Moving on isn’t about waking up one day and feeling nothing. It’s about waking up and choosing yourself, even when the ache is still there. It’s the small decisions — deleting their number, saying no to the “what if” thoughts, filling the quiet moments with things that make you feel alive again
