Rheumatoid Arthritis Warrior
“Did you take some ibuprofen?”
I swear, if I had a dollar for every time someone asked me that when I said I was in pain… I’d probably be able to pay off all my specialist copays.
I know people mean well, but rheumatoid arthritis isn’t a headache. It isn’t sore muscles after a workout. And it definitely isn’t something that disappears because I took two ibuprofen and drank some water.
The thing about rheumatoid arthritis is… you can’t see it.
You see me smiling.
You see me teaching my Pre-K babies.
You see me taking pictures, laughing, making sarcastic posts, showing up when I can.
What you don’t see is the body that’s constantly fighting itself.
You don’t see the exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix.
The pain that moves from one joint to another.
The days when getting out of bed feels like climbing a mountain.
The moments I cancel plans because my body has already made the decision for me.
People tell us,
“You’re too young.”
“But you don’t look sick.”
“Maybe it’s just stress.”
“Did you take some ibuprofen?”
Trust me… if ibuprofen could fix this, none of us would be seeing rheumatologists, collecting specialists like Pokémon, getting blood work, MRIs, injections, infusions, or taking medications with warning labels longer than a CVS receipt.
Living with RA means constantly grieving the version of yourself that could do things without having to calculate the physical cost afterward.
It means learning to celebrate the good days because you never know when the next flare is coming.
It means smiling through pain because, honestly, the world doesn’t stop just because your immune system decided to declare war on your own body.
So the next time someone with an invisible illness tells you they’re hurting… don’t ask if they’ve taken ibuprofen.
Ask how they’re doing.
Ask what they need.
Believe them.
Because sometimes the greatest medicine isn’t another pill…
It’s finally being seen.
To every RA warrior silently fighting this battle every single day: I see you. I believe you. And I promise, you’re not alone. 💙
