Why I Stopped Wearing Wigs/ Weaves

2024/7/2 Edited to

... Read moreYou know, for years, wigs and weaves felt like my go-to solution. They offered versatility and convenience, but honestly, there was a hidden cost I didn't fully realize until much later. I started noticing that my own hair underneath was suffering. It felt perpetually dry, brittle, and often damaged. I'd spend so much time and money on protective styles, only to find my natural hair wasn't really thriving. The overlay text in one of my recent selfies mentioned how 'weaves made hair dry,' and that was exactly my experience. I was constantly battling breakage and a lack of moisture, despite my best efforts. One of the biggest frustrations was the upkeep and the mystery of what was truly happening beneath. Trying to take down a weave or wig carefully could be a nightmare. I remember times when it was so difficult to distinguish between my natural hair and the weave, leading to those dreaded 'accidental cuts' that left me feeling so defeated. It felt like I was constantly taking two steps forward and one step back with my hair health. I also realized how much of my identity I was tying to these styles, rather than embracing my own unique texture. That's when I made the big decision: 'I decided to go fully natural and to never wear weave or wig again.' It wasn't an easy choice, but I was genuinely tired of wigs and weaves. I craved a connection with my own hair, and I wanted to see it flourish without the constant manipulation. The journey hasn't been without its challenges, but the rewards have been incredible. The most significant change? My hair grew so much! It’s truly amazing to see the difference in length and thickness since I stopped relying on extensions. Embracing my natural hair has been a journey of self-discovery and self-love. I've learned to appreciate its texture, its kinks, and its curls. It’s no longer about hiding my hair, but celebrating it. If you're on the fence about making the switch, or if you're struggling with similar issues, I encourage you to consider giving your natural hair a chance to breathe and grow. Focus on moisturizing, gentle detangling, and protective styles that truly protect your hair, without suffocating it. It's truly liberating to love your hair just as it is. Maybe you'll find, like I did, that your natural hair can thrive in ways you never imagined.

protective styles without weave>>>> the weaves would make my hair dry and the lbs of gel braiders use made my scalp sooo irritated. And wigs are just to high maintenance to be a “protective styles”!! Love this post

Mostly black men do this to us...
This racism stuff’s got me fired up. Black women’s hair is always under a microscope. Whether we rock natural hair, wigs, extensions, or weave, other races (and even some black men) fixate on it like it’s their business. When I wear my natural hair without curl cream, black men or biracial women
