our parents still believe she did.

When I was in high school, my sister confessed she dropped out of college but begged me not to tell our parents. She told them she graduated, and for 5 years they’ve bragged about her “degree.” I kept the secret, but they’ve always compared me to her and made me feel like I’d never measure up.

Now I’m back in college finishing my own degree, and they still say things like, “Well, it won’t be as valuable as hers.” Meanwhile, she never even worked in that field because she never finished.

Part of me wants to finally tell them the truth, but I also know it would blow up the family and maybe make me feel worse.

Would it be petty to expose the lie after all these years, or am I justified since it’s eaten at me this long?

... Read moreFinding out that a close family member has been living a lie can be one of the most challenging emotional experiences. In this case, the revelation that a sister never graduated college despite the parents’ belief has deeply affected the family dynamics. It's common for parents to unknowingly compare siblings, sometimes creating feelings of inadequacy and resentment for those still striving to prove themselves. If you’re in a similar situation, balancing the urge to reveal the truth with the fear of family conflict can feel overwhelming. While honesty is important, it's also helpful to consider how the disclosure might impact relationships and whether it will bring relief or further strain. Sometimes seeking support from a trusted friend, counselor, or mediator can help navigate these complicated feelings. Keeping this secret also shows the personal toll that such a hidden truth can have over many years. The ongoing comparisons from parents, who believe in a false narrative, can undermine your confidence and accomplishments. Remember that your real achievements and efforts in finishing your own degree are valuable and authentic. Ultimately, how you choose to handle the secret depends on what you feel is best for your mental well-being and family harmony. Open communication, setting boundaries around unfair comparisons, and celebrating your own journey can help foster healing in the long run. Whatever you decide, it’s important to prioritize your self-respect and emotional health.

From what it sounds like , you're upset with how your parents are treating you, not because of anything your sister did. Outting her would hurt her and not address the actual problem: your parents have really harsh and strong expectations for you guys (which is likely why your sister lied to begin with). As of right now it's causing resentment and friction between you and your sister and I think you should talk to her about that. She's not the enemy, she's someone who confided in you. As for your parents, it makes sense that you want them to be proud of you but it sounds like they have some things they need to work on and I'm sorry. I'm VERY proud of you. Going back to college is awesome and hard work! good luck with finishing that degree. You've done great so far and you're gonna kill it!

Instead of spilling her secret try this, whenever they make comments like that say: ✳️Hopefully I’ll be able to find a job in the industry I got my degree in 🤞- even better if you hold this one back until you DO HAVE a job in the industry your degree is in “ at least I am putting the degree that $$$$ were invested into 🤔🤔🤔 ✳️I can’t wait to display my degree 🥰 hey(sisters name)how have YOU displayed yours? 🤔I need some ideas💡
