He doesn’t want me there

My boyfriend and I have been together for 7 years. His mom planned him a surprise birthday and even invited me I said yes, thinking it’d be a small family thing. But when he found out, he told me to tell his mom I can’t come.

He said it would be “too awkward” having me there since he doesn’t like some of his relatives, and that it’s his day, his house, his decision. I told him it hurt that after all these years, he still doesn’t want me around his family. He says it’s not about us, it’s just a boundary, but it really made me question where I stand in his life.

It’s not like we’re casual we’ve talked about marriage and kids. So I can’t help but feel like this means something deeper.

Would you take this as a red flag or just let it go this one time?
