The Magic Wand Question 🪄🪄

The magic wand question is such a common catch all that is often added to the end of user interviews or surveys (I ask this one too!)

But if we want to get more value out of this age old question we should try to look at it more deeply.

Do you ask the magic wand question? 🪄

... Read moreThe 'Magic Wand Question' is a simple yet incredibly powerful technique often used in user interviews and surveys, especially in product design and tech. It's designed to bypass typical constraints like budget, technology limitations, or even users' own preconceived notions, allowing them to express their ideal solution or experience without holding back. It's like asking: "If you had a magic wand and could change anything about [product/experience/problem], what would it be?" Why This Question Works Wonders From my experience, this question is a goldmine because it helps users drop their filters. We all tend to self-censor, thinking about what's 'possible' or 'realistic.' But by inviting them to imagine limitless possibilities, you unlock deeply held needs, frustrations, and aspirations that might otherwise remain hidden. It surfaces raw emotion and gets to the heart of their challenges and desires. When to Wield Your Magic Wand Timing is crucial. Don't lead with it. Build rapport and trust first. Let users share their stories, their daily routines, and their existing pain points. Once you have a good understanding of their context, introducing the magic wand question feels natural and empowering. It shows you're truly interested in their vision, not just incremental improvements. What You'll Uncover: Pain Points and Dream States When you ask this question, you're likely to hear two major things. Firstly, you'll hear the real pain points. These aren't just surface-level complaints, but often the underlying frustrations that users have learned to live with. Secondly, and perhaps more excitingly, you'll hear their dream state. This isn't just about what they think you can build, but their true vision of ease, efficiency, or delight. It helps you understand their ideal world, which can spark truly innovative design ideas. Translating Magic into Action: What Not to Do It's vital to remember: don't treat the answers as literal feature requests. If someone says, "I'd wave my wand and have a button that does X," the insight isn't necessarily 'build button X.' Instead, look for the underlying themes, emotions, and problems they are trying to solve. What's the core desire behind 'button X'? Is it about saving time, reducing cognitive load, or achieving a sense of control? These are the real insights for your design direction. I’ve found it invaluable to use this question with my own team too, fostering free thinking in critiques and planning sessions before we introduce any constraints. It's a fantastic way to brainstorm and explore new avenues before settling on practical solutions.
