... Read moreOkay, so I’ve been seeing the new Raspberry Matcha all over my feeds, especially from Starbucks devotees, and my curiosity finally got the better of me! As a huge fan of matcha, I’m always eager to try new variations, and the idea of a vibrant green matcha drink paired with those exciting 'Poppin Raspberry' bursts sounded like a must-try. I headed to my local Starbucks, cup in hand, ready for what I hoped would be a refreshing and unique experience.
Visually, it's definitely a winner. The drink arrives with that signature milky green hue of matcha, often with a slight swirl of pink from the raspberry, and you can see those little red 'raspberry bursts' suspended throughout. It's certainly an aesthetically pleasing beverage, making it perfect for a quick photo op – very much in line with the trendy drinks we see everywhere.
However, from the very first sip, I found myself in a bit of a flavor debate with myself. The matcha base itself is what you'd expect from Starbucks: earthy, slightly sweet, and creamy, which I generally enjoy. But then come those raspberry bursts. They're tiny, jelly-like spheres that pop in your mouth, releasing a concentrated, sweet, and tart raspberry syrup. They reminded me a lot of boba pearls but with a much more intense, almost candy-like fruity flavor.
My personal struggle with this drink was the interplay between these two distinct components. While I appreciate both matcha and raspberries individually, I felt the strong, almost artificial sweetness and tartness of the raspberry bursts overshadowed the delicate, grassy notes of the matcha. It wasn't a harmonious blend for my palate; instead, it felt like two strong personalities competing rather than complementing each other. One moment I'd get the smooth matcha, and the next, a burst of intense raspberry would take over, making it hard to appreciate either fully. I guess I was hoping for something more subtly integrated.
For those who are big fans of very sweet, fruit-forward drinks, or who perhaps aren't purists about their matcha and enjoy bold flavor combinations, this Raspberry Matcha might actually be a fantastic discovery. It's certainly a conversation starter! If you decide to try it, here are a few tips based on my experience:
Adjust Sweetness: You might want to ask for fewer pumps of syrup or fewer raspberry bursts if you prefer a less sweet drink.
Milk Choice: I had it with regular milk, but I've heard some people say that oat milk or almond milk can mellow out the flavors a bit, potentially making the combination smoother.
Stir Well: Make sure to give it a good stir to distribute the matcha and the raspberry bursts evenly, ensuring you get a bit of everything in each sip.
While it wasn't my personal favorite, I don't regret trying it. It's always fun to step out of your comfort zone and explore new menu items. For me, I think I'll be sticking to my usual Iced Matcha Latte or exploring other fruit-infused teas that aren't quite as intensely flavored. But hey, taste is subjective, and this 'Poppin Raspberry' matcha might just be your new obsession! Have you given it a try? What were your thoughts? I'd love to hear if you loved it or found it as perplexing as I did!
