Which cities I chose for my Japan trip! Even though it’s my 3rd time going, I still feel I’ve only scratched the surface of Tokyo / Kyoto which is why I’m stationed in those cities and then adding day trips in between :) #japan #japantravel #japantips
Having traveled to Japan three times, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the unique charms of both Tokyo and Kyoto. Each city offers very distinct experiences that cater to different moods and interests. Tokyo is vibrant and fast-paced, packed with modern attractions, trendy neighborhoods, and endless shopping. Kyoto, on the other hand, exudes a more relaxed, historical ambiance with beautiful temples, traditional tea houses, and serene gardens. In my earlier trips, I tried to cover many cities quickly—Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hakone—and although it was exciting, it felt exhausting with constant hotel changes and limited time to soak in the culture beyond tourist hotspots. That’s why this time I’m prioritizing staying longer in Tokyo and Kyoto to really explore at a comfortable pace while fitting in strategic day trips. Day trips are a fantastic way to experience more without the hassle of hotel switches. From Kyoto, Uji is a must-visit if you are a tea lover. Known as the green tea town, it offers a peaceful atmosphere and the chance to taste some of the best matcha in Japan. Nearby Nara is also a perfect day trip destination for its friendly deer park and impressive temples, easily accessible and packed with cultural highlights. I’m also contemplating between Nagoya and Yokohama for additional day trips—Yokohama’s proximity to Tokyo and its charming waterfront and Chinatown appeal to me, while Nagoya offers fascinating history and unique cuisine. From my experiences, skipping Osaka this time feels right because its vibe can be somewhat similar to Tokyo’s, and prices have increased, which takes away a bit of the adventure. Instead, focusing on the contrast between Tokyo’s bustling metropolis life and Kyoto’s tranquil, historical setting seems like the ideal way to deepen my appreciation for Japan’s diversity. I recommend fellow travelers consider their own travel style when planning Japan trips—whether you want to fast-track through many cities or slow down to enjoy fewer places thoroughly. Either way, Japan’s combination of tradition and modernity ensures something special no matter your approach. Stay tuned for my full itinerary soon, sharing detailed tips and must-see spots that helped make my third trip the most enjoyable yet.
