Jost Burgi
28 February 1552 - 31 January 1632 played a leading role in the courts of Kassel and Prague. Swiss clockmaker, mathematician, and writer.
Life
Boer was born in 1552 in Lichtensteig, Toggenburg, then part of the Abbey of St. Gall (now part of the canton of St. Gall, Switzerland). Little is known about his life and education prior to his death. He worked as an astronomer and clockmaker in the court of William IV in Kassel in 1579. It is theorized that he acquired knowledge of The mathematics of Strasbourg, among other things, was informed by the Swiss mathematician Konrad Dasipodius, but there are no facts to support this.
Although self-taught, during his lifetime he was regarded as one of the most accomplished mechanical engineers of his day. His employer, William IV, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, described Berge as "the second Archimedes" (quasi indagine Archimedes alter est). In a letter to Tycho Brahenicolaus Reimers, another self-taught man, translated Copernicus's De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium into German for Berge in 1587. A copy of this translation survives in Graz, and is therefore known as the "Grazer Handschrift". In 1604 he entered the service of
Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, where he made friends with Johannes Kepler, created the Canon Sinuum, which was considered very accurate. However, since the table of sines has been lost, it is difficult to be sure whether it is correct or not.
(For example, Valentinus Otho's Opus Palatinum contains a section that is not as accurate as claimed.) Some of Boers's introduction to methods survives in Kepler's copy, which discusses the basics of algebra (or Coss, as it was then called) and decimal fractions. Some authors consider Boers to have been among the inventors of logarithms. His legacy also includes the engineering achievements embodied in his innovative mechanical astronomical models. During his years in Prague, he worked closely with the astronomer Johannes Kepler at the court of Rudolf II.
There is no record of where he learned the skill of watchmaking, but he eventually became a skilled watchmaker and scientific instrument maker. The most innovative of his time, his most important horological inventions were the cross-stamping mechanism and the guiremonture mechanism, two mechanisms that dramatically improved the accuracy of mechanical watches. Multiple times, allowing the use of a clock to tell time The first scientific instruments were capable of timing the passage of stars (and other celestial objects) across the telescope's line of sight to begin making precise maps of their positions. He worked as a toolmaker for the royal court.
Of William IV, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel
In Kassel he played a key role in developing the first astronomical charts. He invented the logarithm as a tool for astronomical calculations, but as a "craftsman/scholar" rather than a "book scholar" he was unable to publish his invention for a long time.
In 1592, the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II of Prague received Bürgi's globe from his uncle, the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, and insisted that Bürgi deliver it himself. From then on, Bürgi traveled between Kassel and Prague, and finally entered the emperor's service in 1604 to work for Emperor Johannes Kepler's astronomer.
performance
The most important inventions designed and built by Bürgi that survive in the museum include:
Several celestial globes are now housed in the Musée des Arts et Métiers in Paris, the Swiss National Museum in Zürich, the Orangerie in Kassel (2 pieces, 1580-1595), and the Library of the Duchess Anna Amalia in Weimar.
Clocks at the Orangerie in Kassel, the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon in Dresden, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, including one with a quartz mechanical astronomical globe (Bergkristalluhr) and a hexagonal planetenlaufuhr (Planet of the Planets) made for Kepler at the Federal Technical Museum in Prague.
Mechanical model of the anomaly in the Moon's motion around the Earth (Mond-Anomalien-Uhr) at Orangerie in Kassel, Uppsala, Sweden.
As a mathematician, Bürgi's work on trigonometry in 1586 enabled him to calculate the sines with great precision using a number of algorithms, one of which he called the Kunstweg. He claimed to have used these algorithms to calculate the "Canon Sinuum", a table of eight sines in steps of two angular seconds. No other information is available about the table, and some authors have speculated that its span is only 45 degrees. The table was of great importance to navigation at sea; Johannes Kepler called the Canon Sinuum the most accurate table of sines known. Bürgi described his algorithm in his work Fundamentum Astronomiae , which he presented to Emperor Rudolf II in 1592.
The calculation of an iterative table using Bürgi's algorithm basically works as follows: a cell is summed up with the values of two previous cells in the same column, the value of the last cell is divided by two, and the next iteration begins. Finally, the value of the last column is normalized. A fairly accurate sine estimate is obtained after a few iterations. Recently, Folkerts et al. have shown that this simple process converges to the true sine. Another algorithm of Buergi uses differences to construct the table, and this is in anticipation of the famous Tables du cadastre.
Bürgi's work on logarithms
Burke also developed his progression tables, now understood to be antilogarithms, independently of John Napier, using a different method than Napier's. Napier published his findings in 1614, and the publication was widely distributed in Europe by the time Burke published them. At the behest of Johannes Kepler, Burke may have developed his progression tables around 1600, but Burke's work does not provide a theoretical basis for logarithms, although his tables serve a similar purpose to Napier's. One source claims that Burke did not develop a clear idea of the logarithmic function, and therefore cannot be regarded as the inventor of logarithms. Burke's methods were different from Napier's and were apparently invented independently. Kepler wrote about Burke's logarithms in the preface to his Rudolphine Tables.
His (1627) states: " ... to aid in calculations. These logarithms were learned by Justus Brygius many years before Napier's system appeared."
Honor
The Byrgius crater on the moon is named in Bürgi's honor.
