Family of Liars Review 📚

Overall rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was really excited to read Family of Liars after loving We Were Liars, but this prequel just didn’t hit me the same way. The writing is still beautiful—lyrical and haunting in parts—but the story felt slower and less emotionally gripping. It took a while for me to connect with the characters, and I found some of the plot twists a bit predictable compared to the first book.

That said, I did enjoy learning more about the Sinclair family’s past and seeing how the lies and dysfunction started way before Cadence’s time. The atmosphere was moody and well-done, and I appreciated the themes around grief and guilt. It just didn’t pack the same emotional punch for me.

If you’re a fan of the original, it’s worth reading, but temper your expectations. It’s more of a slow-burn character study than a twisty thriller.

... Read moreWhen I first picked up 'Family of Liars,' I was really curious about its genre. Like many of you searching, I wondered if it would be a straightforward mystery like 'We Were Liars' or something else entirely. While 'We Were Liars' is often described as a fast-paced psychological thriller with a twist that leaves you reeling, 'Family of Liars' felt more like a slow-burn contemporary fiction with strong elements of a character study and a hint of historical fiction, given its setting in the past. It delves deep into the family dynamics rather than just a central mystery, exploring the origins of the Sinclair family's secrets and the inherited trauma that permeates their existence. It’s less about a single shocking revelation and more about the gradual unraveling of a family's complex history. For those of you looking for a summary or what this prequel is actually about, 'Family of Liars' takes us back to the summer of 1987, decades before Cadence Sinclair Eastman's story. It centers on Carrie, one of the 'aunts' from the original book, during a fateful summer on Beechwood Island. This is where we see the groundwork laid for the deep-seated dysfunction and lies that define the Sinclairs. It’s a story of young love, betrayal, grief, and the profound impact of secrets. We meet the younger generation of Sinclairs and witness the choices made that echo through generations. It truly feels like walking through the ghost of the island's past, understanding how the family came to be so… complicated. And speaking of the visual aspects, the 'Family of Liars' book cover itself tells a story. I absolutely love how the distressed white text on that moody blue-green background, combined with the subtle paw print and silhouettes, perfectly captures the haunting and somewhat melancholic atmosphere of the book. It’s distinctly 'Sinclair,' don't you think? It has that same enigmatic quality as the 'We Were Liars' cover, hinting at secrets and a beautiful, yet damaged, world. These covers aren't just pretty; they really set the tone for the complex narratives within, drawing you into the world of wealth, privilege, and hidden sorrows. Delving deeper into the 'We Were Liars family' aspect, this prequel really shines a light on how the 'family of liars' came to be. I found myself thinking a lot about the intergenerational trauma and the learned behaviors that are passed down. The original book hinted at the deep cracks in the Sinclair façade, but 'Family of Liars' shows us the early fissures. It explores the pressures of living up to an impossible family ideal, the weight of expectations, and how easily truth can be distorted or hidden to maintain appearances. It's a poignant exploration of grief and guilt, not just as individual emotions, but as forces that shape an entire lineage. You see how the seeds of future tragedies are sown, making the events of 'We Were Liars' even more heartbreakingly understandable. It's a journey into the very heart of the Sinclair legacy, revealing that the lies started long before we even met Cadence.
