What I'm Reading

I've never read an Eric LaRocca novel before, and I'm so glad i picked this one up. After seeing a scathing critique I knew it would be up my alley.

The characters aren't likeable, and the town is deeply unsettling. From the start you know there's a lot hiding in the ground of this town.

The novel's atmosphere is thick with unease, and the setting of the small town feels almost like a character itself — shadowed, secretive, and full of ominous undertones. What truly hooked me was how LaRocca doesn't try to make the characters likable; instead, their flaws and darkness add authenticity and make the story all the more compelling. As I read, I felt drawn into the layers of the town's hidden past. It was clear that much was buried—both figuratively and literally—creating a palpable tension throughout. This novel is a great pick if you're into horror that goes beyond jump scares, delving into psychological and atmospheric terror that lingers. On a personal level, reading something with such an unsettling tone challenged me, but in a good way. It made me appreciate how horror fiction can explore the uncomfortable parts of human nature and small-town dynamics. I found myself reflecting on the complexity behind "unlikable" characters and how they often mirror real human contradictions and darkness. If you’re looking to expand your horror reading list, I highly recommend tracking down "Burnt Sparrow." It also pairs well with other contemporary horror titles that focus on eerie settings and morally ambiguous characters. Whether you’re into traditional scares or unsettling psychological narratives, this book offers a fresh perspective that stays in the mind long after reading.
