Japan eats that still live rent-free 🇯🇵

We spent two weeks in Japan 🇯🇵 (Tokyo, Kawaguchiko, Kyoto & Osaka) for our honeymoon and here are some places we ate at and genuinely loved 🤍

Manten Sushi (Tokyo)

Our first omakase experience — fresh, well-paced, and incredibly satisfying. Great quality without feeling overly intimidating, and also at an affordable price!

Zagin Kintetsu-Nara (Nara)

A memorable experience with amazingly flavourful chicken soba and beautifully marbled beef sushi! This was a surprise find for us - the top of our must-trys!

Sanroukuen (Kawaguchiko)

A traditional BBQ-style meal where you sit on the floor to grill. The atmosphere alone made this unforgettable.

Idaten Fuji Tempura (Kawaguchiko)

Crispy, light tempura done right. Comforting after a long day of exploring Kawaguchiko.

Kuromon Market (Osaka)

Lively, chaotic, and full of amazing street food. A must-stop for snacking and soaking in the Osaka food scene.

Bura Bura Abura Soba (Tokyo)

Rich, saucy, and very satisfying — the kind of meal you crave after a long day out.

Ichiran (Tokyo)

A classic for a reason. Consistent, comforting, and perfect for a quick, solo-friendly ramen fix.

Gyukatsu Motomura (Kyoto)

Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. Watching the beef cook on the hot stone was half the fun.

Kusaka Curry (Osaka)

Deep, flavourful Japanese curry that hit all the right notes — hearty and comforting. Another one of our must-trys! We absolutely love that this Japanese curry is less on the sweeter side, slightly different from your usual Japanese curry.

Wagyu Idaten (Osaka)

Another wagyu highlight. Melt-in-your-mouth goodness that felt worth the splurge. P.s. reservations are required!

Sukiyaki Hokuto (Osaka)

A warm, comforting sukiyaki meal that felt especially perfect for a honeymoon dinner.

Already missing the food so much 🥹

Which of these would you want to try?

... Read moreTraveling to Japan offers not only breathtaking sights but also an incredible culinary journey that stays in your memory long after you leave. When visiting cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Kawaguchiko, it's essential to balance famous must-try dishes with hidden gems that offer authentic local flavors. For example, Tokyo's Manten Sushi delivers a refreshing take on omakase, where freshness and timing make all the difference in savoring sushi properly, while Kusaka Curry in Osaka offers a less sweet, more robust Japanese curry that stands out from typical versions, making it a hearty comfort food after a day of exploring. One of my favorite experiences was enjoying Zagin Kintetsu-Nara’s chicken soba and marbled beef sushi — a surprising highlight that showcased the diversity of ingredients and cooking styles in Japan. It is rewarding to find these unexpected culinary treats while wandering local streets or markets like Kuromon Market in Osaka, where street food brings the city's vibrant food culture to life. When it comes to yakiniku and BBQ, sitting at Sanroukuen in Kawaguchiko, grilling your own food while seated traditionally on the floor, adds a layer of cultural immersion that elevates the meal beyond just taste. Similarly, witnessing your gyukatsu cooking on a hot stone at Gyukatsu Motomura in Kyoto enhances the dining experience, blending visual and aromatic pleasures with textures. For solo travelers or quick meals, classics like Ichiran ramen in Tokyo provide a comforting, flavorful experience that consistently satisfies. And for a special treat, indulging in wagyu steak, like at Wagyu Idaten in Osaka, is worth making reservations in advance to enjoy melt-in-your-mouth premium beef. My advice for anyone planning a honeymoon or food-focused travel to Japan is to mix these iconic dishes with street snacks, local markets, and regional specialties. This approach not only enriches your palate but also deepens your connection to the places you visit. If you love rich, saucy noodles, Bura Bura Abura Soba in Tokyo will hit just the right spot after a day of sightseeing, while Sukiyaki Hokuto in Osaka offers a cozy, warm sukiyaki experience perfect for romantic dinners. Ultimately, leaving Japan, you’ll realize these vibrant tastes truly live rent-free in your memory, tempting you to return and explore even more of this fascinating country’s culinary landscape.

Japan Popz Restos: Were They Worth The QUEUE?
Japan’s great but the downside is the over-tourism and since we were travelling as a family of 10, it was really tough to pre book all our meals so we followed some recommendations that allows us to walk in. Of course we wanted to try highly raved restaurants and see if it’s really worth the hype!

Early September is usually a low peak season in the Japan tourist calendar - its the tail end of summer (so not too hot compared to July/Oct) but fall foliage hasn’t started (so things are not super pretty yet and people will wait a few more months for Nov). Coincidentally its the time Buns can act
