Lessons Learned in my 20s: Control Your Emotions

2024/11/23 Edited to

... Read moreLearning to navigate emotions effectively has been one of the biggest challenges and rewards of my 20s. It’s a period of intense growth and change, and with that often comes a whirlwind of feelings. But what if I told you there’s a simple, scientific concept that can completely transform how you deal with them? It's called the 90-second rule, and it's been a total game-changer for me. According to neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor, the physiological surge of an emotional chemical in your brain and body only lasts for about 90 seconds. After that, if you're still feeling angry, sad, or anxious, it's because you're actively choosing to re-stimulate that circuit. When I first heard this, it was like a lightbulb went off! It meant that the initial, overwhelming wave of an emotion isn't something I have to be swept away by; it's a temporary visitor. So, how do I apply this in my daily life? When a strong feeling hits – whether it's frustration, irritation, or even intense joy – I try to remind myself that it's just 90 seconds. Instead of immediately reacting or letting it spiral, I take a moment to pause. This is where SILENCE IS GOLDEN comes into play. I don't try to suppress the emotion; instead, I observe it. I notice the physical sensations in my BODY, the thoughts racing through my MIND, and how it affects my SOUL or overall well-being. This observation phase is crucial. It creates a space between the feeling and my reaction. After those initial 90 seconds, the intense chemical rush subsides. This is the critical moment where I get to choose. Do I want to keep dwelling on it, or do I want to let it go? I've found that consciously acknowledging the emotion, letting it EXPRESS itself without judgment, and then deciding to shift my focus, truly empowers me. It's not about ignoring problems or pretending everything is fine, but about not letting fleeting feelings dictate my actions or long-term happiness. This practice has saved me from so many LOST OPPORTUNITIES – moments where I might have said something impulsive, made a rash decision, or let a minor upset ruin an entire day. It’s also helped me cultivate stronger relationships, as I'm better able to respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally, making me a more understanding and collected person to be around, which is essential for nurturing connections with GOOD PEOPLE. Embracing the 90-second rule isn't about becoming emotionless; it's about becoming emotionally intelligent. It’s a powerful tool I've gained in my 20s that helps me navigate life's ups and downs with more grace and control. Give it a try, and you might find it transforms your emotional landscape too!

Lessons I’ve Learned In My 40s
Honestly… nobody warned me how good it would feel over here. Your 40s don’t always look like a glow-up or a comeback. Sometimes, they’re quieter than that. It looks like saying no without explaining. Protecting your peace like it’s a full-time job. Letting God lead instead of forcing doors
