Postpartum Tips for the First 3 Months

The first three months after birth, often called the “fourth trimester”, are a time of deep transition, healing, and learning. Here’s what you might experience and how to navigate it with grace:

✨ Healing Takes Time

Your body just did something incredible. Prioritize rest, nourishment, and give yourself permission to recover physically and emotionally.

✨ Emotional Highs + Lows

Hormones are shifting, and it’s normal to feel a rollercoaster of emotions. You’re not alone—reach out if you’re overwhelmed. Support is strength.

✨ No Such Thing as a Set Schedule (Yet)

Your baby’s rhythm will take time to settle. For now, follow their cues and trust that routine will come in time.

Here are some helpful tips:

1. Establish a routine

Night feedings are frequent, and rest can feel impossible. Tag-team with your partner when you can, and nap guilt-free when the opportunity arises.

2. Bonding Is Everything

Hold your baby close, make eye contact, talk and sing. These early moments build deep connection (and calm you both!).

4. Work with a Lactation Consultant

If you’re struggling, you’re not failing. Lactation consultants can be game changers. Give yourself compassion as you figure it out.

5. Self Care

A warm shower. A quiet coffee. A 10-minute walk. These tiny resets matter more than you think.

🙌 Ask for (and Accept) Help

You weren’t meant to do this alone. Let others show up for you, and let go of the pressure to do it all. You’ve got this, mama.

... Read moreThe first three months postpartum, often referred to as the “fourth trimester,” represent a time of significant adjustment for both new mothers and their babies. This phase involves healing, emotional fluctuations, and the gradual establishment of new routines. Understanding what to expect during this period can empower mothers to navigate these challenges with confidence and ease. Physically, the body continues to recover from childbirth. Prioritizing rest, nutrition, and gentle self-care is essential for physical healing. Emotional changes are also common due to hormonal shifts, and new mothers may experience highs and lows. Recognizing these feelings as normal and seeking support when needed can improve mental well-being and reduce feelings of isolation. One of the most challenging aspects of the fourth trimester is the lack of a fixed schedule. Babies wake frequently, especially at night, for feedings and comfort. Nurses and sleep researchers recommend following the baby’s cues rather than imposing strict routines too early. Over time, a more predictable rhythm tends to emerge naturally. Bonding activities such as skin-to-skin contact, eye contact, talking, and singing help build a strong emotional connection with the newborn, promoting both the infant’s development and maternal confidence. If breastfeeding challenges arise, consulting with a lactation specialist can be immensely beneficial, providing practical guidance and emotional reassurance. Small acts of self-care—a warm shower, quiet moments with a cup of coffee, or a brief walk—can recharge a mother’s energy and mental state, making a substantial positive difference. Equally important is the willingness to ask for and accept help from partners, family, or friends. Sharing responsibilities and emotional support alleviates stress. The fourth trimester is a unique, transformative time that requires patience, compassion, and support. By understanding the physical and emotional landscape, new mothers can foster healing, strengthen their bond with their baby, and gradually build a nurturing routine that supports the entire family’s well-being.
