Not bad for my first try. Everything bagel, parmesan/cheddar, and plain.

1/28 Edited to

... Read moreTrying to bake bagels for the first time can be both exciting and challenging. When I decided to make my own bagels, I wanted to experiment with different flavors to see which one would be my favorite. I chose three popular varieties: everything bagel, parmesan/cheddar, and plain. The everything bagel was a fantastic mix of seeds and spices, providing a crunchy and savory crust that complemented the chewy inside perfectly. Using a blend of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic, onion, and salt really made it stand out. For those who enjoy a savory, more complex flavor, everything bagels are definitely worth a try. The parmesan/cheddar bagels brought a rich, cheesy taste that worked well for those who prefer something with a bit more depth and indulgence. I found that grating fresh parmesan and cheddar on top before baking gave a lovely golden crust and a slightly crispy texture that contrasted nicely with the soft interior. Finally, the plain bagels are great for purists or those who like to add personalized toppings such as cream cheese, smoked salmon, or jam after baking. Their simplicity allows the quality of the dough itself to shine through. Baking bagels requires attention to a few key steps: boiling the shaped dough briefly before baking to achieve that signature chewy texture, and using the right flour and yeast to get a good rise and crust. While my first attempt was a success, I learned that slight adjustments in boiling time and oven temperature can further improve the results. If you’re considering trying to bake bagels at home, don’t be discouraged by the details. It’s a rewarding process that allows for customization and experimentation. Plus, fresh homemade bagels have a wonderful aroma and taste that store-bought ones often lack. I highly recommend starting with these three flavors as a foundation and then exploring your own combinations as you get more comfortable with the process.
