The Golden Child: Beliefs, Amulets, and Narratives Being Talked About in Thai Society
The golden child is one of the most famous amulets in the Thai culture of belief, with the name "baby" meaning child, and the word "gold" means something of value, so it can be interpreted as "the famous child." According to ancient belief, the golden child is seen as a child spirit invited to be a guardian of the house or a worshipper. It is believed that he can help take care of the property, warn and bring fortune to the owner.
In folk legends and ancient superstition texts, it is often told that the golden child was born by performing a ritual summoning a child's soul to be a follower of the ritual, but stories in some texts contain details related to the child's body, which is delicate and unsuited to today's society.
Currently, the creation of the golden child has therefore changed dramatically, mainly to the creation of auspicious materials such as handsome figures or amulets that have undergone a ceremony of incitement according to belief, to symbolize the "guardian child" rather than to involve traditional ancient rituals.
In belief, people who worship the golden child often believe that the child can help take care of the house, warn, or help with fortune according to their individual faith. Some believe that the golden child will help trade well, call customers, or help smooth work. However, these beliefs are a matter of folklore and personal faith.
Over the decades, there have been many stories about people who believe they have experienced the golden child, such as some who often hear children running around in their homes, some who tell of missing toys or snacks as if they had been picked up, or sometimes people believe that the golden child alarms, such as feeling like someone nudged or warned before something happened. Most of these stories are personal experiences that are told in society.
Although the golden child is always spoken of in the field of power or divinity, in the view of folklore scholars, the golden child is considered an example of belief that reflects the relationship between man and the spirit world in Thai culture; it is a narrative that combines both faith, imagination and social conditions in each age.
Today, the golden child is therefore viewed both as an amulet, an auspicious object, and a folk legend that continues to be recounted to this day.
