4 Expressway service area in Central Japan

One thing I love about driving in Central Japan is that even the expressway service areas are worth visiting. Easy parking, beautiful scenery, delicious local food, and plenty of regional products make every stop part of the journey itself.

The 4 service areas I stopped by:

• Enakyo Service Area (Up & Down)

• Arisoumi Service Area (有磯海SA)

• Komagatake Service Area (駒ヶ岳SA)

• Oyabegawa Service Area (小矢部川SA)

I also recommend having your lunch here before reaching your sightseeing spots—parking is easy, there are lots of food options, and it saves time compared to driving into crowded tourist areas and looking for restaurants. Save this for your next Central Japan road trip!

... Read moreStopping at expressway service areas in Central Japan is more than just a quick pit stop—it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture and savor regional specialties. From my own experiences driving through this region, the Enakyo Service Area along the Chuo Expressway offers spectacular views of Ena Gorge, making it a refreshing break where you can stretch your legs and enjoy the mountain scenery. The easy access and spacious parking here mean you can unwind without stress. Arisoumi Service Area on the Hokuriku Expressway is a gem, especially for travelers wanting to experience coastal vibes without detouring from their route. This area not only has delightful food stalls but also showcases local products from Toyama, such as fresh seafood and traditional crafts. It became my favorite spot to grab a quick bite while appreciating the seaside atmosphere. Komagatake Service Area, set amidst the Kiso Alps, is a fantastic place to appreciate Japan's mountainous landscape. I found the food choices here, including local specialties, to be a wonderful complement to the scenic surroundings. This stop is perfect for those wanting to recharge before continuing their journey through Nagano Prefecture. Lastly, Oyabegawa Service Area allows travelers easy access to regional delights from Toyama. During my breaks here, I enjoyed sampling delicacies that reflect the local culture, helping me feel connected to the places I was driving through. The presence of amenities and smooth parking made it a convenient location to rest. Planning your meals at these service areas is a smart move, especially to avoid the hustle and crowds near tourist spots. They offer not just convenience but also a chance to explore regional tastes and products, making your road trip memorable and enriching. In my opinion, integrating these stops into your itinerary will transform driving through Central Japan into a multi-dimensional travel experience filled with scenic beauty, delicious food, and authentic encounters.
